beware when i move to a new town ...

first month in Stuttgart, there was a 120 vehicle pileup. not a typo.

first week in Korea i saw a bongo truck go off the side of a bridge.

and second day in Kuwait, an on-coming 6-series Beemer launched himself over the jersey barrier in my general direction, rolling sideways in our lane maybe a dozen times before i grabbed the wheel from the driver (who didn't see it because he was telling me a fishing story) and veered us into the far right lane.

mostly folks in CO drive sensibly, if by "sensibly" all i mean is "not as ass-backwards as most of the rest of the country."

The Board and I try to run this here pubic library like a business, but a minority of the shareholders think it best that the business be run right into the ground. And that's with a 201% ROI year to date.

May be we should issue dividends based on overdue fines so they see a return they actually understand.

Wow...universities becoming more cost-effective and being run like a business...."there goes that darn Liberal media again making issues about Liberal arts colleges and they're Liberal issues about hygene, bras and underarm hair....Darn Europeans!...um, I mean, Liberals!"

That is sarcasm in case you are a little too easily offended. I guess this means that we have returned to the days of my college age youth when the biggest 'news story' on campus was "Fighting Words." And "what are those?", you may ask. Well....it is like the adage: Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me. Except in this case replace the word "never" with "always."

Lesson learned from this: no matter what someone says, you may learn something if you pay attention to what is being said.

I'm glad you enjoyed it Larry. I did too, and so did my semi-Repuglicant wife (I have no idea what she sees in THEM or ME).

On another note, I wondered why no one on here commented on another NPR link I made on Nov. 1st; and I also wondered today what it was about. Therefore, I dug it up and found the link didn't work.

So here's the link again, in case anyone cares still because I think this was and is an important news story. If nothing else, it offsets a little bit of Chris Hedges' argument on journalism...just a bit.

Every night as I ghost over the Edens 'Expressway' I realize those people in their cars are safer than me. At zero velocity there are no collisions. Highway at 0 Kelvin.

Interesting bit Barry, thanks for the link! The smarter half of my marriage fights this stuff everyday at her college. They've been attacked for calling the damn thing a "liberal arts college" as if there's something evil about the word liberal. The right-wingers have been pretty successful in allowing that word to be demonized...probably on a level equal to the word "tax" in their view! I bailed on the Democratic Party after seeing the hatchet job they did on Howard Dean back in 2004, though in the recent election voted for 'em all as the lesser of the evils. I wonder how rich the rich have to get before there's any real reform to set things right?
