Test-driving WordPress on maddogmedia.com

A neighbor's tree is solid gold.

HERE WE GO AGAIN — one more crack at using prefab, off-the-rack blogging software to do all the heavy lifting at Mad Dog Media’s digital domain.

I recently learned that Hostcentric allows clients to install WordPress software for free, and once I figured out how to do that without croaking the years of wisdom I’ve uploaded to their servers, I pulled the trigger, picked a template and started dicking around.

There are positive and negative aspects. On the up side, playing with a new toy got me thinking about redesigning the flag, and I think I came up with a good one. You can weigh in on that design in comments, which the old paint-by-numbers site lacks, and subscribe via RSS feed, another upgrade from the previous edition.

The downside is, I’m an old dog trying to learn new tricks. And surprisingly, WordPress doesn’t have a ton of interesting, versatile templates from which to choose. But I kinda like this one, and I’ll be curious to see what you folks think of it. Holler in comments at your convenience.

If I decide to go the WordPress route, whose main advantage is simplicity and mobility, I’ll keep the old site archived somewhere. Seven years worth of foam-flecked jabbering must be preserved, if only for the prosecutors.

  1. I have often wanted to share a comment with you about your posts, but haven’t because composing an e-mail, and making you open it, seems like to much work for the drivel I would be saying.
I frequent DC, and BSNYC, and they both often have lively discussions.
Good luck with the wordpress / bloging

  2. Hmmm. It’s fine, I suppose… I like the new header. You sure as hell better keep the old content up somewhere, or archive them on the WordPress site for our viewing pleasure. So long as your domain name remains intact once you switch over, I’ll find the WordPress deal-e-o to be perfectly sufficient. And if it’s easier for you, why not?

One complaint – no link love! If you’d like, please reinstate Wheels Of Change (http://www.wheelsofchange.net) in your links section under “Fellow Travelers”. I actually do get some traffic from your direction, and I’d like to keep it! (Speaking of links, I know my old site linked to yours, but I can’t currently remember whether WOC’s site does or not. I’ll check on that, and remedy the error if it exists.)

See ya around. Still enjoying the Bianchi, it’s become my #1 mode of transportation when things need to be carried.

  3. Looks all right to me. The basic layout, which you’ve duplicated, is easy to read, easy to follow, without a lot of distracting crap. So thumbs up from here. I will say I had a WTF moment, when I clicked on the “What Others are Saying” section in the right hand nav, on “Joey”, with the intention of seeing the rest of what Joey had to say, and found myself unexpectedly linked to his web site. Maybe you should relabel that.

  4. As a frequent lurker in the Dogpatch, I like being able to comment directly. Site is clean, if not overly flashy, and you’re able to get in all your main points. My take would be if that the WordPress stuff is easier on your end, then do it. No sense in working on needless drivel when you could be riding your bike!

Love the site, the sarcasm, and the politics. Oh, and the bike stuff, too. Keep it up!

  5. As a long time reader, viewer and fan I can’t really say if the “blog” aspect is cool or not. I enjoy the rants, raves and general mayhew that requires a little ‘elbow grease.’ Any nimrod can create a blog — as surfing the web will attest — but it takes a little bit more than gumption to actually create an intelligent website. And the WWW-site is that.

    I say keep it!

This blog (?) may be better placed as a community forum where we can argue with other readers. And PO’G; is that what you want?

  6. Still mulling it over… change is good… gets one out of his self-imposed rut… but there’s always room for the classics, so give me a minute to waste precious time goofing off here and I’ll round up my thoughts and send ’em to ya (as Sarah would say).

Speaking of mulling it over… mulled it over with a glass of Mad Dog, a Spanish blend of CabSav, Shiraz, and Monastrell. Really needed to breath (light being the greatest disinfectant) but after a spell it was quite tasty… and about $8 at Total Beverage.

  7. Looks fine. If it saves you dough vs the other scheme I’m for it, don’t want you to disappear from the ‘net due to lack of funds.
