Feels kind of like Christmas Eve, doesn’t it? What’s that over there under the Tree of Liberty? Why, yes, Virginia (and the other 49 states, too) — it’s a brand-new White House, one without shit all over it! It’s the gift that keeps on giving, when it’s not overrun by rats, roaches and other vermin, and you can open it tomorrow.
You know it’s time for a change when even Oklahoma is fed up with an executive branch besmirched by the sort of vicious dolt it usually sends to Congress. Leonard Nelson, 63, a 23-year military veteran of both the Army and the Navy, voted for Barack Obama’s opponent, Sen. John McCain. “But I’ve come to think the better man won,” he told The New York Times. And indeed he did.
But let’s not kid ourselves. Obama can’t walk on water, nor turn water into wine. If you must have mythology, look to the tale of Sisyphus and hope, as did the outgoing president’s favorite read, Albert Camus, that he will be happy in his ceaseless toil. There are a lot of rocks to roll, and nothing but mountains for miles around.

Shrub will probably set the drapes on fire and leave all the faucets running when he walks out tomorrow…..
He will probably toss lit M-80’s into the toilets as well.
Patrick is right. W has left Obama scorched earth to deal with. Trouble is, its our earth that Dubya has scorched.
I will be so glad he’s out of Washington and so pissed he’s moving less than one megaton kill radius from my house. I mean I’ll survive the initial blast, but have a 90% chance of dying from the radiation within a week. XP
As of this morning, I can only assume every formerly Republican office in Washington has honey in the keyboards, spit-wads on the screens, pencils in the ceiling tiles, unflushed turds in the toilets, and a few turds in the sinks for good measure.
One in four Americans thinks Bush did a good job. McCain/Palin scored in the mid-40’s overall.
I channel-surfed to Fox News to see if they even bothered to cover the inauguration (at the time, they didn’t). Hannity has some double-secret espionage story he wants to share with America about how corrupt Obama’s cabinet selections are–and how they’re tied to our enemies. I haven’t heard Rush’s voice in years, but I can only assume he’s spewing hate as well.
Good Luck, President Obama. Lots of “patriotic Americans” want to see you fail. And somehow your failure is supposed to make America great again.
I can’t help dog-piling on the rabbit here with one unnecessary comment. You’ll note that West Texas Bush ain’t going back to the great dustbowl of Crawford but instead is moving into a high-brow gated community in Dallas, where there isn’t a lot of brush to be a-cleared. And his future cell-mate Cheney the Dickless, whose wife just wrote a book about the virtues of growing up in the great plains, seems to be doing everything he can to avoid going back there, having taken up residence in the communist country of McLean, VA.
Phonies, every one of them.
My concern is one of the right wing nutjobs going wacko today watching Obama take the oath.
But for the rest of us, its a great day. Both to see someone in the White House who will give it credibility after 8 years in the wilderness, and to see D.C. taken over by crowds from across the nation in a way that reminds me of, and is a culmination of the March on Washington of 1963.
I was a kid then whose parents had recently given up and fled to the burbs from my grandparent’s neighborhood in the Inner City of Buffalo. We kids alternately played together or fought with each other, acting out rage we had no legitimate right to feel, as hostages to our culture.
Oops. Gotta go put that bubbly in the fridge for tonight.
I’m home today with a sick kid, so I’m flipping through the channels, and just saw Colin Powell on Morning Joe.
To hear him talk about joining a recently desegregated Army 52 years ago, and yet not being able to eat dinner at a Howard Johnsons or stay in motel anywhere along the way from New York to Ft Benning as he reported for basic training…
But the part I like about his stump speech is his reference to MLK’s famous words. He keeps reminding folks that if you’re not taking care of your own “quality of your character” part, then no amount of whining about all of the difficulties you face really matters. And that goes for black and white, pink and brown, purple or whatever color you happen to be.
I went to high school in the DC area and still have a ton of family there. I don’t remember ever seeing so many people traveling from so far away to attend an inauguration.
I am overjoyed at the simple gift of English returning as the spoke language of Office of the President.
Now the real work starts.
Good riddance! Now hopefully we can dig ourselves out of the mess we’ve been left! I don’t know about you but after looking at my 401K, I’ll have to work until I’m 90!
