Hail to the chief

In honor of President Barack Hussein Obama, here’s a column I wrote for Bicycle Retailer & Industry News. And for his predecessor, here’s some advice from Jay of Jay and Silent Bob from “Clerks 2.” The important part comes at 18 seconds in.

  1. I was so happy that the Village Idiot of Houston and Midland was out of the White House that I had a special post on my blog, just like you, when Obama was fully sworn in.

  2. “…Up first is a British cyclist that forgot which side of the road to ride on in the US…”

That’s interesting, Opus. My first and only trip to the U.K. started with me entering a roundabout in the oncoming lanes while bike touring from Great Yarmouth to Cambridge. An astute Brit managed to avoid hitting me head on, and warned as he drove past “I’ll get you next time, Yank!”. I was too flustered to respond.

“Former President G.W. Bush” does have a delightful ring to it. Now, on to cleaning up the mess.

  3. Not insignificant in last night’s festivities: the reception Pres. Obama received from the troops at the Commander-in-Chief’s Ball was the loudest I’ve heard in ages, and definitely the loudest for a Democrat since maybe FDR. The times they are a-changing.

  4. Well I call ’em like I see ’em. Most times I think the driver is in the wrong, as in the Single Witness Suicidal Swerve or the Single Witness Crossing Cyclist, when there’s no place for the cyclist to be crossing from or swerving from, and the physical evidence doesn’t match the witness’s report. I’m a bike advocate, but I’m also a realist. And one thing I was overjoyed to read was the report on Glenda Rumsey’s sentencing.

  5. Good article on Rumsey you linked on your web site. The woman deserves to spend a lot of time in jail. No jail time will bring that kid back, but it will send a message to other drunk fools and will send society’s message to her and other DWIs.

  6. I hope Schwinn reads your BRAIN column, that’s a perfect choice. Maybe a little bailout money to jumpstart the production of real bicycles made in the US from American ferrous alloys, instead of the toxic mix of glue molded by 12 year old girls in Taiwan. I race for a Waterford sponsored team, and one of the guys just got an Sr-14 with the S and S couplings, so far he loves it.
