Just a thought

If we really want to do something about broken-down, smoke-blowing shitheaps stinking up our nation, shouldn’t we encourage the steadily shrinking minority of sane Republicans to trade in their sputtering party for a brand-new, fully functional, loyal conservative opposition? An outfit that actually presents workable, sane alternatives to Democratic proposals rather than galloping around and squealing about Nazis, socialists, Jesus, lynchings, foreigners, guns and homos like a bunch of ADHD preschoolers on a Ritalin binge? Call it “Right for Wrong” or something? Just sayin’.

  1. Seems the ol’ party of Lincoln (wouldn’t HE be turning over in his grave if he saw the GOP now?) thinks the only way to go is well, righter. Kind of like the blind man on the Simpson’s when caught with the weed, “If I didn’t smoke this, I’d be…well….blinder” They’ll be kissing up to the Klan next at this rate in some crazy quest to gain more card-carrying members. Demos shouldn’t get too cocky though, some smart guy in the party will revive the big-tent idea and somehow they’ll get going again and stop being simply the “party of NO, Hell NO!” Have to admit it was funny seeing Al Franken on the tube today announcing Sotomayor getting approved to join The Supremes. Nutty Norm Coleman must be seething in his white hood and cape, wherever he is. And now it looks like the US may have taken out a big player in Al Qaeda? Without Dick Cheney! Imagine that.

  2. It needs a name. Maybe the Christian Patriot Party. It is cool to watch the meltdown, and I think this is going to last through at least two more congressional election cycles–with a strong chance of four sets of winning elections. And, as a person who studies right wing nutcases for a living, it’s a fruitful research field! The radical right is freaking out. Hopefully, there won’t be too much more terrorism from white christian patriots.

  3. Darren:

Yes! Right! It is the perfect name. Members are neither Christian nor patriotic.

“Nevermind the Constitution” should be the motto. “God before Country” should be the oath–anything longer is just too much to remember.

Membership is pretty simple: The number of guns in a household must exceed the number of people and pets. Members must pass the first grade or at least be able to recognize the colors red, white, and blue (in that order). Each household is limited to the King James version of the New Testament and books written by employees of Rupert Murdoch. Of course, the New Testament must be referred to often and out of context. Endless hours of cable TV viewing are encouraged, as are hypocracy, low gas mileage, plastic surgery, and shouting.

  4. Hypocrisy. I meant hypocrisy. I get hypocrisy confused with democracy, and then the words just blend in my mind.

  5. Actually, I’d like to see the best of both parties bolt and form some sort of “Demlican” or “Republocrat” party since neither of the mainstreams seem to pay any attention to anyone but their own extremists these days,

  6. I dunno. The point seem to be that an opposition that thinks clearly about issues, but from a different point of view, is more constructive for us all than the ranting “it’s all wrong” crowd we have now. I was just a pup in the 60’s, but even in the Goldwater days, isn’t that kinda what we had? I mean, before the idealogues hijacked the GOP?

There’s a used-to-be-prominant guy here in Wisconsin who quit the GOP about five years ago when he couldn’t stand the extremisits any more. He made a good point.

  7. I wouldn’t get too gleeful, or optimistic, about the ever shrinking Republican Party. All it would take is for some swarthy fellow in weird looking clothes, maybe a flowing robe or a turban, to set off a fire cracker and the Republican’s popularity will skyrocket. “Save us, Newt! Save us from the evil foreigners! The Democrats are too weak on defense to protect us!”

I never forget that on September 10, 2001, everyone knew that George W. Bush was an idiot. On September 12, 2001, his popularity was at 90%. Only 10% remembered that planes tragically flying into buildings didn’t change anything about good ol’ George, he was still a fucking corrupt idiot.

One little “terrorist” attack followed by days of propaganda…er, I mean “coverage” on the 24 hour cable news channels and the American public will stampede back to the “strong on defense” Republican Party.

Oh, and Joe: I consider myself, by American standards, a left extremist, and no, I don’t see the Democratic Party paying attention to me at all. We’re still in Iraq, corporations are still calling all of the shots, and we’re still blowing up civilians in Afghanistan. I don’t see how the Democratic Party is any more left now than it was back in the Clinton years.

  8. The party of Lincoln went under right as TR formed the Bull Moose party. The GOP sold out to the industrialists.
