Happy summer solstice

They say people walked on it once but they'll say anythin' after a few pints so.
They say a man walked on the moon, but you know he wasn't an Irishman, else he'd have fallen back to earth and blamed the drink so.

I almost forgot. Here’s a shot of the moonlit alley the Irish are stumbling through this fine solstice evening.

  1. Most folks know that yesterday was the longest day of the year. Not so well known is that July 4th-ish is the slowest day of the year. As the Earth gets as far from the sun as it will get, conservation of angular momentum combined with a little bit of inertia means that our orbital velocity is leaning towards the laggard side. Everyone knows the 4th of July and New Years for their traditional places on the holiday calendar, but they are also the slowest and fastest days of the year.

We try to celebrate these slow days by drinking a lot of wine, making lots of salsa, and staying clear of mad dogs and Englishmen.
