The prez didn’t score any points here in Dog Country with tonight’s Oval Office address. More later after we gargle a little tonsil polish to take the taste of bullshit out of our mouths.

I continue to think if Obama’s got extremists on both sides pissed off at him he’s doing a pretty good job overall. Sadly, NOBODY could undo the mess left behind after two terms with Dubya and Co. especially in just a couple of years. I fear Obama’s going to end up like Carter as cleaning up the mess left behind by the Repuglicans is never easy and almost guaranteed to make one unpopular. I’m just glad “The Maverick” and “Caribou Barbie” are not in charge of anything – can you imagine the mess we’d be in if THEY were running things?
Patrick:
Don’t be too hard on Obama. The previous tenants at the Whitehouse left him knee deep in runny shit and nothing but a pitchfork to clean up with. Leaving Iraq is going to be a long process. Nature abhors a vacuum, even a political one. The moderates and pacifists aren’t going to rush in to run the country after the troups leave.
Obama might have spewed some BS, but he’s a politician, and that’s what they do. And compared to G.W., he sounded downright sincere.
Are we about to get 1980 2.0?
Remember how badly Nixon stepped on his johnson (after Johnson stepped on his own johnson)? Then Mr. Michigan Football practically fell out of Air Force One in a rush to pardon Tricky Dick. Then we all voted a big Fuck Off to the Repuglican party by sending in our favorite Baptist Nuculer Sub Captain/peanut farmer. He spent four years doing his best, by himself, to read and sign off on every piece of federal paperwork printed between 1977 and 1980. So we said, “Back to Georgia, Hun. Go build us some houses for the poor.” Then it was Morning in America! Ronny RayGun and the Moral Majority sing “God Bless the Pentagon.”
It feels like Bush/Cheney screwed up so badly that we couldn’t wait to vote for a Democrat. Obama sounded really smart (comparatively), he looked good on TV, and he had a nice family. Great! Yes We Can! But now we’re all wondering if he’s gonna make it to 2013. Is he gonna be a one-termer and get replaced by Mitt the Nit, Newt the newt, or a player to be named not too much later? Yikes!
Can someone please let Obama know he needs a platform he can hang his hat on besides, “At least I’m not Bush”? And while I still like the guy, I’m a little tired of the date night/family vacation/golfing with important people/shootin’ hoops pictures. Can I get a photo or two of him working? I see more pictures of Biden working. I’m concerned.
Jeff,
I’m disappointed too, but so many things are screwed up, so many things got willfully delayed that we need now, so many things got shoved down the road to the wrong solution that it is impossible for me to say work on this not that. Then there is the economy and its immediate pain and the need to fix the underlying lack of regulation on the financial industry (can you be an industry if the only thing you make is numbers on a spreadsheet?).
I’d fault Obama only for not making more noise about the need to work on hi vis issues – ie push the Democratic social agenda more- but I have no problem with him tackling a broad front of problems and getting slow progress (but progress) instead of just going for a couple of big showy wins.
I concur with Larry et al in that if everyone on both extremes is upset, Obama is doing something right.
Also, we need to recall that old expression: when you are up to your ass in alligators, its tough to remember that your job was to drain the swamp. BushCo left Obama downwind of a huge fan with a large pile of brown stuff in the airstream: a huge deficit, two wars, low tax rates not able to cope with Federal spending, a spoiled public taught to not be willing to serve or pay, and a deep, unstable recession that may yet turn into the dreaded D word. Plus, this is Morning in America. We sold off all our industry and have no way to pay our way out of the fucking mess we are in. That is one question I keep wanting to ask Paul “shovel more Federal money at the problem” Krugman: Sure, Federal spending may have worked in the 1930s and 40’s. Does that mean it will work now?
Yeah, bring on one or more of the nitwits from the right. I suspect we may have a whole slew of one-term presidents as we keep looking for someone other than the guy in the mirror to blame for the mess we are in.
But I do fault Obama for one thing. He doesn’t ever give the impression that he is firmly in control, and the Donks in Congress are best at forming circular firing squads. This is not good.
Maybe Barack needs to start standing on carrier decks with Mission Accomplished banners behind him, or be photographed with his head poking out of a tank. Nah…neither of those worked very well.
