Champs and chumps

February 3, 2014

Yesterday’s world-championship duel between Zdenek Stybar and Sven Nys was one of the best I’ve ever seen. Much better than the heavily pimped, darkly comical, one-sided feetsball contest that took place later that day in East Rutherford, Noo Joisey (based on media reports; I didn’t watch the thing).

It’s a shame that Lars van der Haar had such bad luck on the big day. He and Stybar have enlivened the business-as-usual ‘cross circuit this season, and the World Cup champion deserved better than a sixth-place finish at worlds. So it goes.

My ‘cross bikes stayed in the garage yesterday as winter maintains its clutch on Dog Country and I have no excess income to redirect toward emergency rooms and physical therapists. Instead, I broke out the old mountain bike again and spent an enjoyable if difficult hour crunching through old snow.

The north-south creekside bike path is in pretty fair shape. But it must be the only one getting plowed lately, because the eastbound trail from Mark Dabling to Union was a rutted, boot-print-pocked mess. Middle-ring, big-cog, 7-mph stuff, is what. I carved untracked snow wherever I could find it, because riding that is smooth like butta.  But crunching through the used stuff involves something of an ass-kicking, even with a suspension fork and seat post.

No worries. I’m sure that once City for Champions becomes a reality instead of an old white land developer’s wet dream we’ll have gold-plated hybrid snowplows working the trails the way a crack whore does South Nevada Avenue. Until then, I plan to keep a shovel handy. And not just for snow, either.

The mark of Z … denek?

My idea of a really good time at the UCI Cyclo-Cross World Championships would not involve having Zdenek Stybar, tanned, rested and ready, lining up next to me.

If I’m racing, that is. If I’m watching, I’m all for it.

“I’m in good condition,” Stybar said via a press release from his Omega Pharma-Quick Step team. “I came from important training sessions in Mallorca and I’m ready to compete. I’m really looking forward to the race.”

The two-time champ is a road toad these days, but Stybar has turned up at a couple ’crosses this year, and between him and the youngster Lars van der Haar (Rabobank) they do keep the old guys huffin’ and puffin’.

My man Dan Seaton has a preview of this weekend’s big doin’s in Hoogerheide over to the VeloPlace. Expect “heavy” conditions, which is Belgian for “lovely day.” I wouldn’t bet the ranch against Sven Nys in the men’s race, and I’m rooting for homegirl Katie Compton in the women’s. Fuck a bunch of journalistic objectivity anyway.

If you have Universal Sports as part of your cable package, you can catch the races live online — juniors, women, under-23s and men. Otherwise you’ll have to fly the Jolly Roger like me, arrr.

No more Mister Nys guy

December 28, 2012

Some heavily marinated frites-eating knucklehead thought it was amusing to toss beer on Sven Nys at the Azencross today.

Said knucklehead thought otherwise after the Cannibal of Baal — who was having a very bad day on the job — dropped his bike and ducked through the course tape to have a pointed discussion with him, just before a less restrained individual flew past to flatten the beer-pitcher.

Nys returned to the course, jogging with his bike, but eventually abandoned in disgust. Two crashes and seven dousings with beer apparently were enough for one day. Afterward he tweeted: “Throwing beer each lap is a bit much, so I got it into my head to go & ask why. A little bit of respect, please.” Word.
