‘Springtime’ in the Rockies

Weird weather around here lately. Pissed down rain for about 30 seconds yesterday (naturally, I had already watered the lawn), then the waterworks apparently resumed while we slept. Right now it’s partly cloudy and 50-something, but dampish with a chilly wind. If this is May, you can have it. I’m just happy I’m not racing the Iron Horse next weekend. Bring your snowshoes, boys and girls.

Big fun at the Giro today. Levi Leipheimer got into a break with Chris Horner and a few other hard men and they very nearly stole a march on Danilo Di Luca.  The Killer said he wasn’t at all worried, but somebody shit on his saddle. The unpronounceable and unspellable Kanstantsin Sivtsov won the stage, probably because nobody could spread the word that he was off the front. “Sit-soo’s gone away!” “Hah?” “I tell you, Shit-Zu has attacked!” “What’s that y’say?” “Sift-soft has had a go!” “Never heard of him, so I’m not chasing. Piss off.”

The bad news is, Rabobank’s Pedro Horrillo had one of those crashes— straight off a descent, over the guardrail and into a rocky ravine. What isn’t broken is bruised, and he’s apparently in a medically induced coma, damn’ lucky to be alive. Here’s hoping for a complete recovery.

  1. The west slope got a late start on spring, and now apparently an early start on summer. We’ve gone from high 50s to high 80s in just a couple of weeks. 90s are in the forecast. I’ve gone from planning my rides for the mid-afternoon to early morning. So much for sleeping in.

Heads up to anyone planning on coming over to do the Tour of the Moon (Colorado National Monument). The Monument has instituted an “enhanced enforcement” of traffic laws, internally known as a “sting” operation. Basically, they’re looking for an orgy of ticket writing. The cyclist-loathing superintendent who runs the place claims she’s not targeting cyclists, but that’s hard to believe given that their “sting” is happening in May (best time to ride the Monument) and that they changed one of the laws regarding cyclists just a week ago. Head and tail lights are now mandatory, reflectors, contrary to what they’ve been telling us all winter and spring, are not good enough. According to the superintendent of the place (and I spoke to Park Superintendent Joan Anzelmo personally) if you don’t have lights they’ll still let you start to ride up the Monument, but the minute you enter a tunnel they’ll give you a ticket. Isn’t that sweet of her?

  2. Near perfect weather for the Santa Fe Century today. Sunny weather, started out in the mid to upper ’40’s and the high was in the low 70’s during the ride, with light winds.

I, on the other hand, am cooked…

  3. Out here on the Wild Coast, the annual Davis Double Century went off yeaterday in a balmy cloud of near 100 degrees. Makes one wonder why they want to move the Tour de Northern Baja – US Division to May. Just replace the cold and wet with dry and hot. Makes sense.
