Some showdown

Well, that was … unimpressive. Pretty Boy waits until 10km to go to “attack,” Super Spaniard rides his wheel to the line and gives him the stage win, all wrapped up with a pretty little bow on it, then it’s time for a hug. Ick. Bernard Hinault and Sean Kelly probably just threw up in their mouths a little bit.

Pretty Boy better find himself some snap if he ever wants to beat this dude. Trying to ride Alberto Contador off your wheel on a mountain stage is like trying to drop a tattoo.

Meanwhile, Radio Shackstrong has hired a criminal defense attorney and begun body-checking random pedestrians and manhandling photographers. Now that’s what I call some cycling action.

  1. Dull. Lackluster. Kind of boring? I’d wouldn’t be hoping for big sales of DVD’s of this year’s Tour. Putting this on when you climb on the trainer this winter will makes time go by even SLOWER! I’d guess this year the Giro d’Italia DVD might outsell Le Beeg Shew.
BigTex has plenty to worry about now as his final Tour winds down with nobody but the feds paying a lot of attention to him, one can understand why he’s a bit testy, eh? Who’s Shackstrong going to hire now? They need someone capable of winning the only race they care about or will they shift focus to the team prize in all the big races now? I’m surprised The Belgian, who is called the world’s greatest DS by so many, couldn’t somehow do more with this hand-picked team. RadioShack should ask for their sponsorship money back!

  2. Big Tex didn’t look too happy in that clip. Its been a pretty serious fall from grace this year.

With Armstrong hiring a criminal defense lawyer and RadioShask not getting close to the podium, do you think RadioShack will throw in the towel? If nothing else, they had better come up with some better TV ads.

I dunno, Larry. Seems the Belgian came to France with a bunch of almost-contenders and Old Guys(tm).

  3. “I’d guess this year the Giro d’Italia DVD might outsell Le Beeg Shew.”

I checked with World Cycling about getting the 2010 Giro on DVD. No dice. They replied with “footage fee’s changed this year, no current plan to do the giro”, although they did reserve the right to change their mind at some point. Given all the “excitement” of this year’s TdF, they might just be reconsidering right about now.

Meanwhile, does anyone know another source on a DVD of the 2010 Giro on this side of the Atlantic?

Oh well, I always have my VHS copy of 1989 to watch…again.

  4. It’s a damn shame that Horner had to wait for Big Tex on one of the earlier stages, or even worse, that he wasn’t the designated Man for The Shack right from the get-go. One thinks he could have been in the top 5, no problem. Always has a smile on his face, smart, good interview, knows cycling… Kid’s got a career in TV when he hangs his wheels up (he could take Roll’s place IMMEDIATELY, if you ask me).

  5. Khal,

The Belgian bringing Old Guys ™ to the Tour? Damn, sign me up! I think I could do a better job on the press front than LA, and I tell ya, I look good on a bike, even if my speed is off a little. Maybe Patrick should see about entering a group of us next year under the Old Guys Who Get Fat In Winter banner.

  6. There you go — Team Old Guy®. Thirty-nine? Old? Piffle. I got bike parts older than that.

  7. “Body-check?”
Patrick that is not even an illegal play in football (aka soccer) so how is that even a body check? Maybe a cross check to the back but since it was shoulder to shoulder seems to be a fair play.
That and the fact that ol’ TCWSNBN was riding and not skating.
Nor was he carrying a stick.
So really all we have is some ol’ dude getting PO’d at another old dude.
And, honestly, if that was the MOST exciting thing to happen in the TdF…..WOW!! Glad I’m waiting for hockey season and the cross season. Is it only fitting that they both start about the same time?

  8. I’m sure the Giro DVD will be available from some source. I bought one here in Italy but until we return to the US of A don’t know which of our players it might work on. Interestingly enough, the DVD’s RCS/La Gazzetta’s been selling this summer have separate commentary tracks, Italian and ENGLISH! So they’re thinking of marketing beyond the Italian market. I hacked one of our players to ditch the regional stuff a few years ago but lost color at the same time so they play but only B/W while later discs have played just fine in most of our players. As to The Belgian…he’s the boss, so why didn’t he get better players? Oh wait, he’s not the boss, nor is BigTex. Who will they say was the boss when the feds come asking? These guys are in-charge when the praise comes in for organizing a great team and race wins but when the feds come sniffing around about doping suddenly they’re both Sgt. Shultz.
O’Grady should head for some place with cooler temps — get outta the heat!
