Sadly you’re right about Alaska. How many folks would be up there if it was just for the hunting, fishing and outdoor life stuff? All kinds of carpetbaggers went up there to cash in on big-cash handouts to build pipelines, etc. but are the first to scream, “keep your gummint hands off my medicare, welfare, etc.” Could we get governor Rick Perry of Texas to take over up there and help them secede from the Union? The oil we get from Alaska probably costs as much as Saudi Arabia’s when you factor in all the tax money sent up there to prop up the state. Give it back to the natives!

The Alaska Tea Party caper reminds me of when good ol’ Dick Cheney visited our fair city to gin up support for Bush/Dick in 2004. Our Vice-President’s local party bosses rented the city’s convention center and issued invitations to the party faithful. Yours truly went down carrying a large protest sign, only to be “greeted” by some fellows dressed just like the goons in the video clip. They claimed the same “private event, you are not allowed here” baloney as I stood on the PUBLIC SIDEWALK! Some city cops showed up and I asked if these goons could stop me from standing on the sidewalk? The goons were trying to direct me to a special “protest” area that was of course totally out of view of any TV cameras or attendees. I refused to stand there and the cops explained to the goons that yes, I did have the right to stand on the public sidewalk. While standing there, a local newspaper reporter asked for a statement but said it would not be published in the paper unless I gave my name, which I reluctantly did. Meanwhile some smart-ass waiting in line to get in to listen to Cheney made a crack about Nazi’s while pointing at me. The reporter never asked this guy for his name but the next day’s newspaper had my quote along with the wisecrack! These right-wingers talk a lot about opposing tyranny and dictatorship but they act quite differently when they have the power. Vote for sane candidates in November (if you can find any)!

One of my buddies at the Univ. of Hawaii was Ricky Grigg, who as in the Oceanography Dept. He was a well known big-wave surfer in the sixties, all the while working on a Ph.D. in Oceanography. He and I collaborated on some coastal oceanography back in the nineties. I could never stay upright on a long board, though. After I saw James’ post, I googled Ricky and watched some excellent Youtube video of North Shore (i.e., Pipeline, Waamea, Sunset, etc.) surfing.
That’s “Waimea”. Grrrr….
