Mmm, beer

Ivywild School
Ah, remember those glorious fall school days, when Teach' would pour you a nice pint of porter before getting down to the Three Rs. ...

Here’s something you don’t see every day: The fine folks at Bristol Brewing and the Blue Star want to turn a shuttered school into a brew house, bakery and community center.

I got wind of this a while ago and my only complaint is that this project isn’t happening in my neighborhood. We got schools out the wazoo around here — surely we can afford to shut at least one of them down, make a happenin’ hangout out of it. One is an easy two-block stagger along a bike path from Chez Dog.

God knows what passes for education in this country these days lacks a certain value. We might as well get drunk and enjoy the decline and fall.

Meanwhile, early returns indicate that this WordPress blog is at least acceptable to the literati (which is to say that while it remains largely content-free, at least it will load on both Macs and Windoze boxes). More as it develops. Any Linux weenies out there? Leave your thoughts in comments, please.

  1. On the bright side Patrick…at least you live in a part of the country where a brew pub is economically viable and feasible.

The old school down the hill from my house was turned into apartments for folks 55 and up.

At least neither structure was torn down to build a Walgreens.

  2. Not admitting to being a Linux weenie, but I do have a Dell Vostro A90 running Ubunto 8.04 that I bought as penance for leaving my real laptop out in the rain. The site looks fine from where I sit.

  3. Chris … well, yeah, who but a Mick would take a school named for a Kennedy and turn it into an alehouse? ’Tis vengeance on the educated for the Gaelic inability to grasp concepts more subtle than the shillelagh or the car bomb. Let’s see how feckin’ smart the English are once they’ve a drop taken.

Barry, a couple of shuttered schools have become businesses in these parts, but as far as I know this will be the first one turned into a brewpub. As you note, we don’t lack for the latter — even the Blue Zoomies have one up in the Industrial Christianity Corridor. I haven’t visited that one yet for reasons that should be obvious.

Bruce, glad to hear we’re ticking along. I haven’t fired up my Linux laptop to eyeball the new site yet, though it’s within arm’s reach. Talk about lazy. Of course, the Irish have been known to sit in barrels of Guinness when too weary to lift a glass and draw the brown goodness osmotically right up the ass.
