Hot town, summer in the city

August is going out like a dragon that breathes fire from both ends. We just had two consecutive days of record-setting heat, as in 93 yesterday and 95 today, and may get the hat trick tomorrow, when the forecast is for 90-94.

Toss in a 5.3-magnitude earthquake near Trinidad that was felt as far north as Fort Collins and it’s already been quite a week, though it’s only Tuesday.

Tomorrow our new dog Buddy goes to the vet for the third time in a month — this time, he’s going under the knife for bladder stones — and Herself’s Wednesday I won’t even tell you about, other than to say that it starts at dark-thirty and ends at dark-thirty and involves work, study and more than a hundred miles of driving.

And Your Humble Narrator? I actually have a day free, so who knows? I might ride a bike or something, like those dudes contending (Not) The Tour of Colorado. Only slower. Much, much, slower.

  1. Best wishes and best luck to all at the DogHaus, especially Buddy! My dear cat, Sophie, had surgery for stones – big, ugly ones that looked like chrysanthemums on x-ray. Hideous! My male cat had perineal urethrostomy due to crystalline blockage. The surgery creates a wider opening – a life-saving procedure for male cats. Urinary blockage can kill in less than 24 hrs.

Patrick, enjoy your “free” day in the sun with plenty of fluids and sunscreen!

  2. A free day? And what was that excuse about how you couldn’t go see the “whatever you call it” race? I doubt Cadel and Co. will be riding past your doorstep anytime soon, get out there and watch them!

    1. Well, of course, by “free day,” I meant a day free of journalism. I still have to water the lawn to keep it from catching fire; either do the grocery shopping or fry up a cat; lend Charles Pelkey a hand at LiveUpdateGuy.com; pick up Buddy after surgery; cook dinner or have leftover cat; and somewhere in there get my own nice, long bike ride in. I got a choice between watching and doing, I’m always for doing.

  3. Lawdy don’t fry up a cat. They’re stringy and take a ton of MSG to make tasty. Plus fried food is not good for you.

Ah a day free of work, sounds good. Agree with Larry go do something you normally wouldn’t have a chance to. Besides lawns are bad for the environment. Dirt is much greener.

Got to say this laid off thing has some real upsides (the money issue is not one of them) Ride in the morning, ride in the afternoon, go for a swim in between. Chat with a barrista, check out the local farmers market. Oh to be retired and youngish with an income.

We need to tax the retired they, like the poor, have it too easy.

So here’s a late morning glass to Buddy’s health and a speedy recovery from continuing education for Herself. Looking forward to your post of tonight’s menu.

Be Merry, Ron Paul’s not President yet.

  4. Doing’s better than watching OG, you get my vote there. I thought you might (like our idea about seeing this thing would have been) be able to get close enough to ride up one of the climbs and see the real guys race up it, then ride back to your car. We did this most recently at Il Giro where we slogged our way up the Colle Finestre to wait for the race to pass by. I agree with Ben on the lawn issue, ours gets whatever falls from the sky as irrigation, I wouldn’t waste any piped-in water on our field of crabgrass…and I don’t care what the neighbors think, they already figure we’re Commies!

  5. Yeah, why spend one bit of time, effort, or money growing something you can’t eat? What’s left of my “yard” will be a doubling of the current vegetable garden next summer. As Patrick would say…Fat City.

Hey, we had our own rumbles over here yesterday you know. I don’t know how you couldn’t have known about it.

I must say it was an interesting experience, since I had always wondered what a quake would feel like. Kinda cool since it didn’t wreck shop here.

At least it’s starting to look like Irene might give my neighborhood a pass this weekend. I’ll be wishing the best for all the folks north and east of here.

  6. 93 two days in a row? Cry me a river Patrick, I rolled out tonight when the temps dropped to 101… for the 59th time this summer. I keep the AC in my bedroom at 80 just so I stay acclimated to the heat…
