Ice, ice, baby

Pikes Peak
The big hill got a dusting overnight, but nothing like the three feet reported at Wolf Creek.

Thirty-seven degrees this morning. Snow on Pikes Peak. Wearing pants — in the house! I can feel my tan lines fading already.

Now commences the annual ritual of hunting down winter cycling kit. Long-fingered gloves, tuque, long-sleeved jerseys, arm, knee and leg warmers, tights, jacket, all that good shit. It’s around here somewhere, but I’ve been trying mighty hard not to think of it, reasoning that to imagine winter is to bring it on.

Today’s high is expected to reach only the 50s, and the NWS expects rain and snow tonight. Down with the pergola cover, out with the snow shovel, unplug and coil the garden hoses. Good thing I whipped up a big pot of vegetable beef soup last night. There’s a chuck roast in the ’fridge, free-range pork in the freezer and bottles of warming red wine nestled in the rack.

The U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross is coming to Fort Collins, but I won’t be there. I’ll be right here, chained to the desk, pushing pixels for The Man. At least I’ll be warm, well fed and wined to the eyeballs.

  1. 40 deg this morning and drizzling in BombTown. My office at work, where they haven’t found the “on” switch yet in the steam plant, was about 55 deg. Supposed to get snow and rain tonight. The Sangre de Cristos have white hats, too, like that picture you posted of Pike’s Peak.

    Stay warm, brah.

      1. 80 yesterday, 78 today. Out with the touring bike and a load if water jugs for and excuse to ride slow and still get a workout.

More of the same tomorrow and Sunday. Yes!

  2. After 2 weeks of cold rainy crap here in Wisco, we have had 9 days of 70-80 degrees and sunshine with last night low at 61. This is ‘spose to continue thru next Thursday, when a after a little rain it will warm up again for the next weekend.
Of course, we’re always only one day away from the first snow this time of year. I ride with the wind….

  3. Fall showed up here in Viterbo Italy today. Before that it was summer-like, also in Piedmont where we were last week. We’ll soon be back up there and I’m wondering how much “winter” we’ll have to deal with before we escape down to Sicily where they claim you can swim in the sea at xmas time. Meanwhile, we’re certainly warm, well fed and wined, though maybe short of the eyeball level. Watch for a CycleItalia blog post soon about eating and drinking as a break from the bicycle-related stuff we’ve been posting.

  4. 85f and sunny on Iowa’s east coast… Pretty close to perfect. Well… there are those 30mph gusts from the south.

  5. Feels like summer has returned here in Duluth. 85 and humid, but the wind is really starting to come hard. More hot air movement than a Repug debate. But easier to take.

  6. It’s been sunny but cooler here in the humidity capital of the USA. Most here like it, but I’d prefer the hot.

I did break down and turn on the heat today, since the wife stumbled upon a surprise dinner guest. We can perhaps live with 67 or so in the house; but decency spoke otherwise with regard to our guest.

This is what my mechanics would say.
Today was the first day with snow on the pavement. When the sun came up it was gone, from the pavement, I will agree that when it is blowing horizontilly, sp? it makes it hard to pick a line.
Keep the rubber side down and pedal faster to stay warm.
