Ah, jaysis. Poor Dan Martin went down like a sack of spuds falling off a truck in a wet start to the Giro d’Italia today and is out of the hunt for the pink jersey.

Charles Pelkey and I were calling stage one at Live Update Guy — pop round and see us, we’re on for the duration — and I had just stepped away from the iMac and into the kitchen when half the Garmin-Sharp team hit the deck during the team time trial. No worries: I got to see it over and over and over again, along with shots of Martin in the classic broken-collarbone pose (one I know well). Ouch.

It’s always hard to judge a crowd from TV, but it looked like a hell of a turnout, despite what the Irish call “fine soft weather.” If only the tarmac were equally soft.

Brutal. Besides Martin’s cousin, the half-Irish Nicholas Roche, is there any other Irish rider in the Giro?
Never been to Belfast and I enjoyed seeing parts of it onscreen and the great crowds. The weather played too large of a role. That’s what bugs me about the TTT. Some teams rode the entirety in rain.

Geez, first Martin falls off in L-B-L, now this? Crowd looked thick in spots, thin in others on the RAI broadcast, which did NOT show the Garmin fiasco over and over. I’ll be glad when this Irish dalliance is done with and they get back to where the Giro belongs.
Sunday we’re doing this – so look for some photos on the CycleItalia blog soon afterwards. Gotta go before my risotto with truffles gets cold – I’m gonna move here someday!

The weather played too large a role in an outdoor sporting event? Always wishing a speedy recovery to those who decked but that is racing. It is why most of us can’t do it.

Yes, I did think the weather played too great a role in that TTT. That doesn’t dismiss skill, equipment choices and bad luck. I wasn’t referring to Garmin but the significant gaps. I didn’t make it clear. I’m not referring to weather for prologues, ITT, or the entire field. It was a very technical, urban course. Some teams raced the entire event in rain. Bonifications are reduced this year. Don’t like seeing the field of GC contenders reduced by time gaps in the first stage.

Been there, done that. It sucks.

Talk about weather, Patrick may have to bust out the X country skis to get to the grocery tomorrow. Is this really May?

What is it about the Argyle Army that they can’t keep riders upright? Are they taking over from Euskatel in that area, always to be snakebit? Looked liked Martin slid out on a wet manhole cover. One would think the lead rider in the line would be aware enough to avod those things.
