Perro-Roubaix

Never did find the damn velodrome, though. I knew I shoulda taken that left turn at Albuquerque.

Them’s what y’call your free-range, grass-fed, humanely raised, non-GMO, gluten-free, all-American, New Mexican pavé, cuate. I bet you even John Degenkobble would have a few misgivings about riding this lot.

  1. Would be a nasty place to do an endo.

Be back later. I have been honing my sarcasm on the comment board of the New Mexican. I swear to St. Tullio Campagnolo, the crystal-worshipping, chem-trail ducking, RF-field averse liberals of Fanta Se give the left a bad name. These folks are as useful to logica as Tea Party true believers. Is there a brain left (or right) in the house?

So get off my bloomin’ lawn!

      1. There is a serious lack of critical thinking around these days and a fair number of people who think that looking something up on the Innertubes means it is solid information. How does the average citizen know if something is solid science or junk science or just inflated flakery? I really don’t know what to expect of the public. I have to spend a decent amount of time sorting the shit from the Shinola when I look stuff up and if there is one thing one learns as one ages in my business, its that the more you learn, the more you realize that there is so little you really know.

      2. The Rethugs have done a good, long-term job with science and facts, creating the idea that both are just opinion and conjecture. This way their opinion, conjecture and outright chicanery gets taken as equal. Thus the old “everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own FACTS” routine. Plenty on the left fall for this baloney too, just look at the childhood disease epidemics coming back because these boobs refuse to get the shots for their kids.
Meanwhile, on this side of the pond, a well-deserved victory at P-R by a guy who was not afraid to fail. No “limiting his losses” or settling for a podium spot for Degenkolb! Bravo!

      3. Nothing, really. Unless you live in a fire zone. Article about controlled burns up here in the Jemez and Sangre de Cristos. Some lady claiming that you can’t trust the Nature Conservancy because they take money from Dow, and are therefore complicit with what happened at Bhopal. Also, that we use napalm to do controlled burns, that controlled burns are a serious source of CO2 and cause global warming, etc. Huh?

Best comment on controlled burns was from a former Sandia guy who basically said he was not convinced it was cost effective or a viable way to control for catastrophic burns or damage to watersheds. Good points to mull over. Figures that someone from the Dark Side would be the most logical…..

      4. I thought you coneheads used nuke-powered lasers for your controlled burns, or tactical warheads. X-ray vision? Mind control? ‘Scuse me, the voices say I need to polish my tinfoil fedora.

      5. If one really want to be ecologically sound, one must use a giant magnifying glass to ignite controlled burns.
I need to polish my tonsils. Come on down and join me.

PS: The Mazama review was really good. If I, or Sandy, decide we really want a Saga Disc, Microshift bar ends and 10 speed Deore drivetrain seem a good way to go. How did you like the Spyre brakes other than the clearance issue? Would you go 180 rotors on your own bike?

      6. After I got weighed at my doctor’s office last week, I thought I might have to go to 200 mm rotors…..

    1. “I feel we’re in a very shabby moment, and neither the literary nor the musical experience really has its finger on the pulse of our crisis. From my point of view, we’re in the midst of a Flood, a Flood of biblical proportions. It’s both exterior and interior—at this point it’s more devastating on the interior level, but it’s leaking into the real world. And this Flood is of such enormous and biblical proportions that I see everybody holding on in their individual way to an orange crate, to a piece of wood, and we’re passing each other in this swollen river that has pretty well taken down all the landmarks, and pretty well overturned everything we’ve got. And people insist, under the circumstances, on describing themselves as ‘liberal’ or ‘conservative.’ It seems to me completely mad.”
      ~ Leonard Cohen

    2. Patrick, you use a go-pro for some of your reviews, yeah? Here’s a cheap back-up if you’re worried about coming home with all parts intact:

      https://meh.com/

I just stumbled onto Meh.com not all that long ago. They’re kind of like if LUG and the Lug-Nuts took over Groupon.. Eg, sold something a while ago that came in black or white. Dude ordered black, they sent him white. Dude complained … so they sent him a Sharpie!

      1. Speaking of cyclocross, I hope Stybar wins PR – maybe next year? If Boonen is healthy next year Stybar will have to ride for him.

    1. I was riding the Bianchi Zurigo Disc, Pat. I fattened up the rubber a bit, to 700×38 Contis, and you’d be surprised how well it rides that sort of thing.

Happily, there’s not much of that razor pavé on the nearby trails. Most of them are pretty sweet, with lots of flowing bits and the occasional buzzworm.

      1. Nice bike, but still can’t believe you rode that rocky trail on a hardtail cross bike. You are a better man than I, Patrick.

        Or, just crazier.

    1. Charley, the trails hereabouts remind me a lot of the trails down at McDowell. I think there are more cacti here, and perhaps fewer flowers. Though Herself and I did see some flora on today’s brief outing.

  2. I sometimes think that riding bikes on and off road at age 65 was being, perhaps, a little too risky. But, I guarentee you I ain’t thinking about have quintuplets!

    1. Risky? I guess it’s how you define risk. For me it’s a quality-of-life issue and the benefits far outweigh any risk, though with MTB’s these days I for sure get off and walk the thing over dicey bits more than I did 20 years ago!

      1. Same here Larry! I think without the bicycle I would be spending more time in the doctor’s office and pharmacy. Almost all of my medical spending goes to the dentist.
