There is a serious lack of critical thinking around these days and a fair number of people who think that looking something up on the Innertubes means it is solid information. How does the average citizen know if something is solid science or junk science or just inflated flakery? I really don’t know what to expect of the public. I have to spend a decent amount of time sorting the shit from the Shinola when I look stuff up and if there is one thing one learns as one ages in my business, its that the more you learn, the more you realize that there is so little you really know.

The Rethugs have done a good, long-term job with science and facts, creating the idea that both are just opinion and conjecture. This way their opinion, conjecture and outright chicanery gets taken as equal. Thus the old “everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own FACTS” routine. Plenty on the left fall for this baloney too, just look at the childhood disease epidemics coming back because these boobs refuse to get the shots for their kids.

Some lady claiming that you can’t trust the Nature Conservancy because they take money from Dow, and are therefore complicit with what happened at Bhopal. Also, that we use napalm to do controlled burns, that controlled burns are a serious source of CO2 and cause global warming, etc. Huh?
Best comment on controlled burns was from a former Sandia guy who basically said he was not convinced it was cost effective or a viable way to control for catastrophic burns or damage to watersheds. Good points to mull over. Figures that someone from the Dark Side would be the most logical…..

Indeed, Libby. That stuff is sharp, too, especially for the skinny knobbies favored by knuckleheads who ride cyclo-cross bikes everywhere for no good reason.
Speaking of cyclocross, I hope Stybar wins PR – maybe next year? If Boonen is healthy next year Stybar will have to ride for him.
What bike were you on?
I was riding the Bianchi Zurigo Disc, Pat. I fattened up the rubber a bit, to 700×38 Contis, and you’d be surprised how well it rides that sort of thing.
Happily, there’s not much of that razor pavé on the nearby trails. Most of them are pretty sweet, with lots of flowing bits and the occasional buzzworm.
Nice bike, but still can’t believe you rode that rocky trail on a hardtail cross bike. You are a better man than I, Patrick.

If I am ever lucky enough to ride those trails with you, I’m bringing my Niner. That looks like a 29 by 2.1 inch Smart Sam Plus terrain to me!

Charley, the trails hereabouts remind me a lot of the trails down at McDowell. I think there are more cacti here, and perhaps fewer flowers. Though Herself and I did see some flora on today’s brief outing.
I sometimes think that riding bikes on and off road at age 65 was being, perhaps, a little too risky. But, I guarentee you I ain’t thinking about have quintuplets!
Risky? I guess it’s how you define risk. For me it’s a quality-of-life issue and the benefits far outweigh any risk, though with MTB’s these days I for sure get off and walk the thing over dicey bits more than I did 20 years ago!
Same here Larry! I think without the bicycle I would be spending more time in the doctor’s office and pharmacy. Almost all of my medical spending goes to the dentist.
