The firing line

A bear in the air just north of El Rancho Pendejo.

The clattering of helicopters overhead had become irksome, so I stepped out to see what the hell.

Hm. City cops, sheriff, KOAT-TV. … Goddamn it, has someone posted my résumé on NextDoor again?

Nope. Seems there was body count up the street around Larchmont and Montgomery. Just a short while earlier I had bicycled through that very area twice, at the start of a fine bike ride and again at its conclusion.

The media called it an “active shooter situation,” and indeed it was. Two people dead — one of them the suspect — and four wounded, two of them police officers. Happily, it seems neither sustained life-threatening injuries.

There were few details in a short presser I caught on Twitter, and nobody asked the question uppermost in my mind: How fucking stupid batshit insane do you have to be to start shooting citizens and throw down on the cops when there’s a police substation within earshot?

More guns; that will fix it, Caps be popping in Tucson too.

Jesus, Patrick. You could practically throw a rock from your house and hit that location.

Yup. It’s a mile to the Smith’s if you take the scenic route — Comanche to Tramway to Montgomery — but a good deal less as the crow flies.

I usually ride up Comanche to Camino de la Sierra/Glenwood Hills, then hang a left on Montgomery and drop down to Larchmont and hang a right, to avoid the hideous clusterfuck of an intersection that is Tramway and Montgomery. So I was right in the ol’ free-fire zone yesterday, an hour or so too soon to catch a stray round.

I’m surprised I didn’t hear the gunfire. We can hear the street racers and sirens on Tramway when the wind is right. And the copters certainly make their presence known.

It could be a whole lot worse. You could be in Ukraine where a whole bunch of ignorant robots directed by a wannbe Scarface are scattering lead about in random directions.

    • Patrick O'Grady Says:

I’ve given up trying to game out what that spook douchebag is up to in Ukraine. He makes about as much sense as a soup sandwich. If he wants the south and east of Ukraine he could’ve had it long ago, and without all this senseless slaughter.

      • Pat O’Brien Says:

That’s what I was thinking too. Take the Southern part, but just enough to run your new gas pipe directly to European customers with no oceans involved. Pooty would essentially be done by now, other than an manageable insurgency. Only manageable because pawns (soldiers) are expendable to him. That’s OK, but I wouldn’t mind seeing two oligarchs in a cage match. Hell I would even lock them in, destroy the key, and walk away.

        • Shawn Says:

Be sure to add in one bad ass Ukrainian street fighter in the cage and watch what happens. But don’t forget to give a key to the street fighter so that he can get out to help rebuild his country.

Regarding any gas pipeline to Europe, Putin has f*cked up any option of that up for a long time.

In answer to your question, pretty damn dumb.

    • Patrick O'Grady Says:

For real. I wonder if we’ll ever find out what his malfunction was. We won’t get the story from him, but there were survivors.

This would be the third round of killings in that neighborhood since we moved here. Dope fiends cornered and murdered some young dude in his driveway at Montgomery and Larchmont as he was on his way to work, and if memory serves a maniac strangled his girlfriend in the apartments at Tramway and Montgomery.

      • Opus the Poet Says:

We just get random semi-auto gunfire at night, been about 5 years since the last fatal shooting in my ‘hood. Not much after that was the last shooting as the shooter in the fatal shooting got popped.
