Ash Monday

Looking NNW from the road to the Sandia Tram.

You’d never know it from this pic, but the whole state of New Mexico seems to be on fire.

Meanwhile, Hal reports snow up to Weirdcliffe. Go figure.

The air has been a little chewy here the past couple of days with 20 or so fires doing the business. But the temps and winds have dipped a tad, and if we could only get just a little bitty bit of what Hal’s getting up north the firefighters (and asthmatics like Your Humble Narrator) might get some breathing room.

Meanwhile, the gov’ has hollered emergency, fires are banned, and fireworks may be next. Sayeth the gov’:

“It’s going to be a tough summer. So that’s why we are banning fires. And that is why on Monday I will be asking every local government to be thinking about ways to ban the sales of fireworks.”

Good luck with that. The Stupid is strong among our people, and if they can’t get fireworks, well, they’ll just break out the smokepoles and try to shoot down the moon.

Banning fires, eh? She better get ready to put Mother Nature in cuffs. And the stupid seems to win out over executive orders.

The good news is, people are still chucking cigarette butts out the windows of their cars. Jesus H., etc. I was in a trailhead parking lot the other day and it looked like a landfill with all the crushed cans, broken bottles, and Marlboro stubs.

My friend who lives in Marin County, CA tells me they have had no rain to speak of since December. I hope you do get some of Hal’s weather. I had 5-6 inches of heavy, wet snow last week. It is so soggy in the Northeast.

Man, those folks in NoCal don’t need any more fire. I have friends in Petaluma, Santa Rosa, and Hopland who’ve seen enough of that nonsense to last a lifetime.

That said, I could do without heavy, wet snow, too. What we need is 72°, white sandy beaches, and an ocean to go with ’em.

Because I do not hope to burn again
    Because I do not hope
Because I do not hope to burn
Desiring this man’s match and that man’s folding shovel
I no longer strive to strive towards such things
(Why should the agèd eagle stretch its wings? To get away from the fire?)
    Why should I mourn
The vanished power of the pristine forest?

You ever wander over to the Poetry Foundation and just start reading stuff at random? I’ve had some good times doing that. It’s how I stumbled across weirdos like Dean Young and Ron Padgett.

I don’t but I probably should. I was heavily into poetry in high school. Meena taught English but mostly novels and short stories, so I got diverted in that direction.

When I saw your “Ash Monday” post the first thing I thought of was T.S. Eliot. He was one of my favorites in 11th Grade Mr. Wild’s English class, when he said we were bored, and let us do Free Range English Literature.

Dry thunderstorms predicted for us tomorrow. Meanwhile the current relative humidity is 4 percent. You simply can’t make up shit this bad. Wish us luck. Got to run along now and pay attention to important stuff like Johnnie Dep’s trial and McCarthy’s latest lie.
