Less than zero

The folks at NOAA have some chilly news for Bibleburgers.

Great googly-moogly! It’s colder than the ice cubes in Weepy John Boehner’s breakfast martini out there.

The weatherfolk say we may crack zero today. But when I got up we were at minus-8 and we’ve been inching downward ever since. Right now we’re at 10 below zero.

I guess this means the nude sunbathing is right out. Poo.

  1. Ooo, Jack London. I remember reading that story as a sprout. Flat put the fear of winter into me, it did. I’m surprised I ever dared take up the ancient and honorable sport of cyclo-cross after reading that bad boy.

  2. Mid-MO Snowmageddon Report:

Mother Nature is working on 12-18″ snow totals plus 30+ mph gusts. Near whiteout conditions. Getting hard to see the houses on the other side of the street. MU is closed. Wife and I are getting on each other’s nerves. Cats are eyeing us hungrily. Send bourbon.

    Dale

  3. Not much more fun here on Iowa’s east coast. Tomorrow looks to define “sucks”.

Wednesday…Windy. Cloudy with light snow likely in the morning…then partly sunny with a slight chance of light snow in the afternoon. Areas of blowing snow. Snow accumulation around 1 inch. Total snow accumulation 17 to 22 inches. High around 15. Northwest wind 20 to 30 mph with gusts to around 35 mph. Chance of snow 70 percent. Wind chill readings to 12 below in the morning.

  4. Bourbon. If I could bear the thought of leaving the house it would be to fetch whiskey, for sure.

We’ve been pegged at -4 for a while now, with a wind chill of -29 and a forecast low of (gulp!) 15 to 23 below zero with wind chill of minus-32 to -42. I haven’t seen temps like that since we left Weirdcliffe. I fear for the ’83 rice-grinder’s engine block.

No snow. That’s something, I suppose. I’m just not sure what.

  5. If you wouldn’t get up at 0400 and turn on your computer right away, you could avoid looking at stuff like that…

  6. Haha…I’m a little jealous of the snow part all y’all are getting…the below zero part though? Not so much…

After some spotty rain tomorrow, the sun’s supposed to come out and take us close to 60. Methinks I’ll slide out of the office at lunchtime and not return til Thursday morn. Hopefully I can log 3 or so hours on the bike.

Oh Dale….I’ve got a decent collection of whisky and whiskey stocked. Come on over! The driving ought to get better in TN.

  7. Snow? We don’ got no steenkeeng snow! All we got is cold, and plenty of it. It makes Dale and me think of whiskey, which is almost always a bad idea. The drinking of it, not the thinking of it.

Still, it does ease the pain, which reminds me of this old Webb Pierce song as redone by Ted Hawkins, who sadly is no longer with us. Dude knew something about pain, for sure:

  8. Lots of snow here. Thirteen below last week. More snow tomorrow please no ice storm.
Patrick, many Bibleburg mentions during the tv coverage of the USA Figure Skating Championships…..

  9. Sunny, nice northern breezes and temps in the low 60s. This is why I love Cali. Sorry to hear about the suffering y’all are doing but a nice trip out this way to thaw off sounds good right about now, don’t it?

This message was brought to you by the California Tourism Board…..or someone who has never spent a day suffering through the snow/ice/sleet that makes winter so interesting.

  10. Well… it’s supposed to be windy tonight and tomorrow here in SoCal… Does that count as “bad weather?”

    No?

    Oh, sorry…

  11. 20 degrees, steady state winds at 31mph, gusts to 60mph, 12″ of snow with another 12″ on the way. When the sun comes up it’s XC skiing time. With a sail 30mph is a possibility. Downwind, downhill what’s the difference?

  12. An hour on the trainer yesteday, and today….an hour on the XC ski machine. WAY TOO COLD to ski outside with zero degrees and serious wind-chills. We’re gettin’ outta here later this month for a week or so in Moab (where we hope it’ll be warm and sunny) but right now it can’t come soon enough! We skipped winter last year by escaping to Italy and right now I’m remembering why that was such a good idea. We’ll be there next year, not here!

  13. Sunny and just under 60 today. It was windy and that managed to make it feel colder than it should have. Nonetheless, I hung in there for three hours on the road today.

I’m applying food and whiskey as I type.

  14. Oh yeah…thanks for the Webb Pierce tune Patrick. That’s one of my favorites. Oddly though, the first time I ever heard the song was on an early Jon Spencer record years before I ever knew the name Webb Pierce.

  15. Glad to oblige with the Webb Pierce. I first stumbled across a reference to the song in a James Crumley novel, but never heard it until the local NPR affiliate played the Ted Hawkins version, which is a heartbreaker of the first water.

Wind trainer again today. It was either that or deal with the real wind, a notion I discarded after briefly sticking my face into it. Cold without snow serves no purpose. A bit of the white stuff on the ground and I’d go ski one of the neighborhood parks instead of going bzz bzz bzz in the office, stinking the place up, with the Allman Brothers as a soundtrack. Feh.
