Yeah…. that image is pretty disturbing. Any sort of major release of radio-nucleotides is going to make thing so much worse with respect to the recovery efforts. At least the prevailing winds take it to sea. And… the impact to the Japanese electric infrastructure to the shutdowns is not going to help either. Japan gets about 24% of their electricity from nuclear.
One has to feel for the victims of the Japanese earthquake and the resulting tsunami — when Mother Nature gets riled, look out! The nuke thing is something tha bothers me, the proponents of nuclear power always go on and on about its great safety record, redundant systems, etc. All good — until it isn’t. A huge earthquake comes along and destroys all the backup safety systems…and the world might end up with a nuclear accident that makes the earthquake/tsunami damage seem small in comparison.
