Round two

Via Facebook, Charles Pelkey advises as follows:

“Pathology is mixed. Nodes are clean, but tissue margins are not. Ready for Round II. The Rolling Stones were right: ‘What a drag it is getting old.’

Charles faces a second round of surgery to clean up around the edges, plus a dash of radiation, but he’s not lying around on the floor, drink-sodden and weeping, the way I would be (and often am anyway, regardless of how well things are going). He was in court today, handling a case, and another client just walked into his office for a consult as we were chatting on IM. So he’s still very much up and at ’em.

In other Velo news (ho ho ho), Neal Rogers has been named editor in chief, replacing the departed Ben Delaney. Please say a prayer, light a candle or sacrifice a goat on his behalf, but don’t blame him for the unintelligible quotes in the press release, which appears to be a Google machine translation of the original Cretin.

My personal fave is attributed to Peter Englehart, CEO of CGI: “His sense of what makes a strong editor will continue to represent Velo as the voice of authority in the cycling space that speaks with authenticity and uniqueness to the sport’s many fans.” But I doubt he actually spoke these words. Nobody can be this stupid, not even a TV guy.

  1. This Englehart guy sounds like he could be an economist for the Tea Party. If you can’t dazzle with the facts, baffle with the bullshit. That’s my theory anyhow.

  2. ” I hear everybody say
    things are different today.”

I am uniquely and authentically (really) pleased for Neal Rogers’ s huge upgrade and the good news part of Charles’s update. Hang in there C.P.!

    1. I think it to the far right side of the road in most states. There with the broken beer bottles, tire treads and used condoms.

  3. Good news for CP. And here’s hoping that even better news lies ahead.

As for the quotes from Boulder/San Diego……what the fuh? I noticed the word “passion” a few times from those knuckleheads. Makes one wonder what magic fairy dust they will be paying staffers with now. I can truly say that this is a sad time for VN. I can still remember the first time I picked up an issue in San Diego off of Midway. Must have been 1992 and I was impressed with the writing, photos and journalistic integrity. I’d say something about the cartoons….but I am trying to remain positive here.

    Just kidding, Patrick!

The good ol’ Mud Stud hooked me and up until a few years ago, kept me coming back. Thankfully I can come here to get my cycling info from now on. Or that website from Down Under. Either way I am not planning on going to Melo, Yelo, Jelo, Felo or whatever-o any time in the near future.

  4. Mr. Englehart clearly didn’t take my wife’s class in effective rhetoric.

As far as “…He (Neal Rogers) takes over for Ben Delaney, who left the magazine after the Tour de France so that he could spend more time with his family…”

Um…isn’t this the usual standard excuse for a parting of the ways? Kinda like saying “we aren’t going to tell you what really happened, just lard on the same old cover story”

All the best to CP. That cancer word is scary shit.

    1. K, the funny thing is, one of the factors in Ben’s decision was that he never got to spend any time with the wife and kidlets. Lots of travel, long hours, constantly playing defense against The Man — you get the picture. He and the family are enjoying a road-trip vaca’ as we speak. Good on ‘im, sez I.

  5. My best wishes for C.P. After the operations it should get easier. Unfortunately it will always be different.

The press release is a classic of non disparagement clause writing. The less intelligible the better.

    Bummer.

  6. No news on where ol’ JW will land? Back-in-they-day, JW and Sam Apt were the go-to guys if you wanted to read anything intelligent and well-written about pro cycling. I don’t have much optimism about the “new” Velo….can almost see the next cover, “20 Ways to Great Abs” and “Energy Bar Shootout” already. Glad to hear CP is up and at ’em!

    1. Larry, I’ve chatted briefly with John, who says he’s mulling over a number of possibilities. No details, but it’s early days yet. Dude obviously has mad skillz after covering 43 Tours, so I expect he’ll be able to find something to keep him busy. You’ll be reading him again, I feel certain.

  7. “Buycycling”, “Men’s Urinal”, “Men spending their Wealth”, “We no longer go OUTSIDE unless it’s to shop”, — the titles may be different but the ads and the covers are the same, and sadly so is the crap on the pages between ’em! I still remember the old gag, “I didn’t know shit before I started reading (insert favorite magazine name here) now I’m full of it!” Maybe JW can get Rouleur to hire him to write some stuff for them? It’s about the only thing actually readable to me these days regarding cycling, except Italy’s Bicisport and Cicloturismo and I’m often too lazy to struggle through an entire issue of either of those when I’m in the USA at least.

  8. Neal is a smart guy, well-deserving of the editorship … but I’m sure he realizes that he’s going to trying to dig the magazine out of a huge hole created by a series of idiotic corporate management decisions.

I wish him all the luck in the world. He’s going to need it.
