Judas Priest. More fires. Not in the immediate vicinity this time, but we’re sure as shit getting the smoke.
This is worse than anything the Black Forest fire threw at us (well, down here by Chez Dog, anyway). The Gazette says this cloud is either from a fire near Wolf Creek Pass or another going on in Jefferson County. Others are burning in Huerfano County near the Spanish Peaks, Cañon City, up by Rangely … gonna be a long, hot summer, folks.
The prevailing wisdom at the moment is that these are lightning-caused. So I’d like to know whether the NSA has been monitoring God’s communications, and when we can expect an arrest.

Welcome to summer in Colorado, where as soon as the snow stops the fires start. Although sometimes there’s some overlap.
Besides the Colorado fires, there’s also a fire southeast of Moab in the southern La Sal Mountains from which we’re getting some haze here in GJ. If you’re thinking of heading to Moab, though, no worries, Moab is up wind of that particular fire. The heat might still kill you though: 95 in the shade is about 350 when you’re out on that slickrock.

Speaking of popups, The Gazette is gonna be popping up downtown come December. That should be amusing. They’re settling into our fabled Drinkin’ and Fightin’ District on North Tejon, in a building that once housed a bank at which Your Humble Narrator cleaned toilets circa 1973 as a college dropout-turned-janitor for Floor-Brite.
I wonder whether today’s newspaper types drink on the job the way we did. At least we could still spell after a dozen longneck Buds and a few lines of the dumb dust.
We are in red flag or near red flag conditions down here too. 100 yesterday with 33 mph gusts. I just hope we can get though this shit into the rains. Welcome to the new normal.
A look east towards the Sangre de Cristos this morning has them shrouded in smoke. Seems that most of New Mexico has its own local fire. Maybe we should at least have a competition.
Drought sucks.
Just glad I don’t live in South Fork. They seem to be in the path of a real nasty one.
