Stoned again

screwedNiki Terpstra caught ’em napping en route to the Roubaix velodrome today. I was thinking maybe Sep Vanmarcke would be the guy this time around, and he was certainly one of them, but it was the Omega man who sealed the deal after 257km of dust and cobbles.

Comrade-Attorney Charles Pelkey decided on the spur of the moment to crank up the Live Update Guy machinery for the occasion, but technical difficulties prevented my participation. Chuckles is test-driving some new jabberware developed by a legal colleague, and it didn’t like me for some reason. Can’t imagine why — I’m such an easygoing, compliant, sweetheart of a fellow.

Speaking of dicks, Boom-Boom is coming off as something of one post-race, wondering at some length and volume why nobody seemed interested in giving him the old palanquin ride to a fifth cobble trophy. How big is your mantlepiece, anyway, Tommeke? Haven’t you been stoned enough for one lifetime, Boombeleh?

At least the winner was from your team. You could’ve gotten punk’d by Vanmarcke, Peter Sagan or (horrors!) Brave Brave Brave Sir Wiggo. Whoops, looks like you did.

Look for Belgium to change its name, move, and not leave a forwarding address.

  1. Singletrack for me today, and on a double boinger. As you said, some of us are real old. Wind has been howling at up to 30 mph, blowing up clouds of dust. Yuck. I feel like an extra in the opening scenes of Grapes of Wrath.

    1. Fine weather for a Belgian.

None of the bike for me today, though we have proper Belgian weather here. There was a job of work needed doing, plus we had one pair of tenants move out of The House Back East™ while another is due in.

  2. I didn’t read/hear/see Tommy’s comments yet, but it does sound reminiscent of Thor’s response to when his teammate, Van Summeren won P-R back in 2011. Thor came across as peevish when he complained that Van Summeren didn’t come back from leading the race to help Thor defeat Cancellara. I guess “Team Leader” is a far cry from “Team Player”.

  3. I didn’t even think to check out the LUG-Nutz this morn. Maybe it’s my increasing apathy towards watching anyone else do something that I should be doing, or even watching somebody else do anything when I should be doing something else.

But following the Luggites isn’t exactly like sitting in the Rockpile at Coors Field. To paraphrase Groucho Marx, it’s more like being in a club full of people who also don’t want to be in the club.

I was shocked to see (Brave) x 10^23 Sir Bradford Wigglesworth with a single digit next to his name. If a Schlecker had been right above him, I might have keeled over.

    1. Can you imagine it? A Schlecker, top 10 at Paris-Roubaix? It would cause a rift in the space-time continuum and allow the Great Old Ones to return. “Ph’nglui mglw’nafh Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn!” Which, roughly translated, means, “You gotta be fuckin’ shittin’ me!”

  4. Due to a bad back I’m off the bike for a year, when I get back on do you have jersey in xxxxxxxxxxxxLRG. I just found who won???, nothing on the TV tubes, but I did see alot of news on CNN about the plane crash.

  5. We also went riding today. Took the Saga for a spin. The ES goes tomorrow while Sandy is shearing alpaca.
Surprised to see Wiggo up there. I always equate bad luck on the cobbles with George Hincapie.

    1. Good on ye. The weather just keeps getting worse here. Our new guests had to change their undies after driving down from Denver. Plenty black ice and folks leaving the highway regardless of whether there happens to be an off-ramp handy.

      1. Please send it here, ice and all. We have smoke on the mountains since 2 PM. Upper Garden and Scheelite canyons in the Huachuca mountains out my front door.

  6. I missed the LUG coverage! I was just wondering if he was going to do any races this year. I’ll have to go check out the transcript.

    Pretty good ride for BBSW.

      1. I’m not much of a Wiggo fan, but I do RESPECT his respect for racing. It would have been very easy for him to fall into the TdF rut and avoid any other big challenge, but he took on the Giro last year instead and despite that debacle, took a crack at Paris-Roubaix this year. I also like the fact (despite the beard) he now looks like a human being again rather than an escapee from a concentration camp – something that’s far too common in TdF competitors these days.

  7. Nasty day here too, wind still howling and snow still flying. I give the benefit of the doubt to Boonen. He blew the race apart but didn’t come home first. When you’re the king of cobbles and the king of Belgium, you either do the expected, which is WIN or you fail miserably, even if your teammate wins. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Belgian paper headlines are “BOONEN beaten!” instead of “Terpstra wins!”

  8. No pave’ here today, and fewer skateboarders/trick bikes on riverpath as the new skateboard park is a big hit! Only darting little children, long-leashed and no-leashed dogs, and oblivious geese- watchers to contend with in the 70deg breezy sunshine.(yay -eugene)
