Fear and loathing … but mostly loathing

Fear and Loathing, Campaign Trail style
The more things change, etc.

Every time I read a story like this I wish someone could reanimate Hunter S. Thompson and send him lurching back out on the campaign trail.

Wouldn’t you like to get the take on Ted Cruz, Donald Trump and Marco Rubio from the guy who wrote: “Any political party that can’t cough up anything better than a treacherous brain-damaged old vulture like Hubert Humphrey deserves every beating it gets. They don’t hardly make ’em like Hubert any more — but just to be on the safe side, he should be castrated anyway.”

Or of the inevitability of Richard Nixon: “This may be the year when we finally come face to face with ourselves; finally just lay back and say it — that we really are just a nation of 230 million used car salesmen with all the money we need to buy guns, and no qualms at all about killing anybody else in the world who tries to make us uncomfortable.”

Or: “Jesus! Where will it end? How low do you have to stoop in this country to be President?”

  1. Or, my donation to the cause: “This may be the year when we look back at guys like Richard Nixon and and thought it could never get any worse..the race to the bottom has no end in sight”

  2. I have no words to adequately describe my disgust with all but one candidate. And as appealing as he seems compared to the others, he is a career politician after all. But in a desperate act, I sent Bernie $10.

    1. As a career com-symp I, too, have kicked in some bucks to Bern’. But I keep thinking back to another book I read right around the same time — Michael Herr’s “Dispatches,” bits of which found their way into many a Vietnam War flick.

      Herr wrote:

“Boy, you sure get offered some shitty choices,” a Marine once said to me, and I couldn’t help but feel that what he really meant was that you didn’t get offered any at all.

      1. Loved Dispatches, my dog eared copy sits in pride of place with all my other books of conflict, mainly Boer war & SA Border war.

We were based on the British military model so a lot more formal, but kudos & respect to anyone who served

    1. Caught them in the open. Good. Shame anyone had to die. My compassion is near the breaking point with that Finicum asshole. Just had to be a martyr. He was part of that cancer on the Arizona/Utah border (Colorado City/Hidale) that is suddenly and finally getting more state and federal law enforcement attention. I would have preferred that Jeffs and Finicum shared a cell at supermax along with other terrorists.

  3. Wow. Thanks, Patrick, for reminding me of things I don’t remember reading the first time around. How very apt these proclamations are for today’s candidates.

  4. I think I re-read HST’s Fear and Loathing every big election cycle. Lord, do I miss the man.

And BTW Patrick, if you were to watch Full Metal Jacket just after you read Dispatches, you’d see that the Kubrick screenplay was damn near word for word, scene for scene from Herr’s book. Both of ’em were just damn good.

    “Seven-six-two millimeter. Full metal jacket.”

  5. Are we getting closer to my dream matchup – Sanders vs Trump? I think that’s the only way Bernie can win…and then we gotta hope the same voters elect a bunch of Senators and Congressmen who’ll go along with the Sanders program once he’s in the White House. Otherwise it’ll be same s__t, different prez with the likes “Yertle the Turtle” proclaiming his main goal will be making Bernie a one-term guy instead of doing what’s right for the USA. If “Benito” Trump wins my plans for retirement in Italy will be moved up…way up!
