Old 97s

Somebody has parked a laser cannon overhead.

Hm. ‘Bout time to crank up the ol’ solstice ritual, looks like.

The weatherman says it’s 97 out there at 4:44 p.m. Duke City time, and I believe him, just having taken a lap of the ‘hood on the Vespa to keep the battery topped off.

And it only gets worser as the week drags on. Ninety-seven, 101, 102 … you get the idea.

Nothing like what Pat and Sandy are enduring down in Arizony, I imagine. Shucks, those folks have to get up before they go to bed if they want to get a coolish ride in.

The Boo doesn’t even bother to get out of bed on days like this. He dosses down right next to an air-conditioning vent in the floor and pretty much stays there.

  1. Very hot in Texas as well. But I hit on some luck and am headed to Bellingham in July to ride the San Juan Islands and into Canada. Probably won’t want to come back due to the heat and you…the state of things…

    1. Ooo, lucky you. I haven’t been to Bellingham since I was writing up a piece on Softride for that Boulder-based journal of competitive cycling whose name eludes me.

They won’t let me into Canada anymore. No passport. Plus I no longer hablo the old français.

      1. Softride?

In my collecting days I had 8 of the things taking up real estate in my garage.

Sanity’s prevailed & I’ve whittled it down to 1 which I haul out for special occasions & to freak people out.

          1. Thanks JD.

It’s dawned clear but possible high winds this afternoon & heavy rain tomorrow.

Today’s high for Auckland is forecast for 16 degrees Celsius, (that’s 60.8 of your Freedomheit degrees).

Yesterday I actually had to put on a jersey for a few hours! How in Gods name are we expected to survive in this savage & brutal climate?

Fortunately, we have a Lions rugby tour & a little boat race in Bermuda to distract us while we huddle around our stoves.

  2. Saw where they expect 120F in Phoenix on Tuesday…..time to fry some huevos on the sidewalk I’d say! Gotta good salsa?

Looking ahead…..scary thought, eh…….on 21 August ABQ should get a respite from the sun…..90% eclipse, or close to that there, as the moon slides between us and old Sol.

Gotta luv the celestial and cosmic rhythms that make life so incredible.

Neill deGrasse Tyson would be proud!!!

    1. Charles Pelkey anticipates a very good view of the eclipse from Casper, Wyoming … I’ve been thinking about making the drive, but lawd, is that ever a long one. And you wind up in Casper at the end of it.

      1. On Aug 21, I will have been a Fort Collins resident for an entire three weeks. Should be an hour or so drive to perfect viewing latitudes. If I see a 7 ft tall cycling wearing a barrister’s powdered wig, I’ll be sure to say howdy.

        1. Dale, Himself and I chatted via AIM the other day and the tentative consensus was that we would skip the Tour this year. We’re both busy as hell, and frankly I have lost interest in following the racing scene; it devours time I could invest in riding my own bikes.

Charles may change his mind, but I’m definitely out. I am in dire need of some “me” time.

  3. Nearing triple digits here in the Los Angeles foothills. I think the soil in the front yard has become harder than our concrete driveway.

Meanwhile the bikes need work. But even in the shaded work area, I lasted about 10 minutes before retreating to the comforting hum of my office A/C.

  4. Good day. Sierra Vista has a record high temp for today of 103. Since they have predicted 105 today, which we reached yesterday, I think we may set a new record high or the solstice. Hurben, you have any cool weather you can send our way?
