No Moore, thanks

When I said “dusty,” I meant it. Actually, “powdery” might be more accurate. A popcorn fart has a higher moisture content than the local trails.

I had chores to do yesterday, and plenty of ’em, so I didn’t get out to ride until late in the day.

And that was fine. It was warmish (temps in the mid-50s), but with the sun low in the sky I thought I’d ride trail instead of road, so I pulled the Jones off its hook and kicked up a little dust over toward the Embudo dam.

Seems there was a dust-up of another sort altogether in Alabama. Short-Eyes the Preacher managed to screw the pooch instead of someone’s little girl and thus he will be free to “pursue other opportunities,” as the saying goes.

I’m sure there’s a dog show somewhere that could use a judge. As long as he promises to steer clear of the puppies, that is.

    1. Now we get to watch the ‘Bama secretary of state and The Turtle slow-walk Jones into his Senate seat. I figure he assumes office shortly after Zefram Cochrane invents the warp drive.

    1. The trails over by the Embudo dam are a little sketchier than the ones by the Elena Gallegos Open Space. And it being late in the day, I thought fat tires and disc brakes made sense.

Plus the bike looked so lonely hanging there on its hook.

      1. At the risk of repeating myself, if you decide to put new shoes on the Jones for pavement and dirt, I suggest the Schwalbe Smart Sam Plus. I have been running a set for a year, using regular tubes, and have had no flats. With regular tubes with no sealant, you don’t gain much if any rotating weight versus tires with thorn resistant tubes and sealant.

      2. I’ll look into them there, Pat. I’ve been running 29×2.4 Maxxis Ardents on the Jones, and with Slime inners they do get a wee bit heavy.

Today it was back to the skinny tires (700×35 Maxxis Raze), cantilever brakes and drop bars. I need a new stem for this Steelman. 110mm is too bloody long for this auld fella.

  1. Best comment today goes something like this: “Roy Moore should say he’s retiring to spend more time with his wife and your children.”

  2. That was a bit of a nail-biter. Jones was behind for a long time but the NY Times kept projecting him as a winner. I guess because the urban area results came in late. I sat up waiting for the count to pass 99%. Whew.

    1. I’ll confess I had written it off as a valiant but doomed effort. And of course Short-Eyes the Preacher has yet to concede defeat, though even his horse has trotted back to the barn.

I’m hoping to see Steve Bannon explode in a cloud of grease, venom and cheap hooch, but I suppose that would be too much to ask for, even with Christmas just around the corner and me being such a good boy, too.

  3. Last I heard there was about a 2% spread – now that’s not counting absentee, provisional, and overseas absentee. I just hope the final margin is enough to eliminate the possibility of an automatic (state funded) recount.

    1. No TUE involved, just taking too much of an “OK as long as it’s less than X amount” PED. I’m sure we’re in for a long, drawn-out series of excuses from the wizards at SKY since they managed to (so far) dodge their way out of sanctions in the past when their dodgy doings have been called into question. Just like my feelings for the Rethugs, cheats are one thing, but hypocrites are even worse!

      1. Therapeutic Use Exceptions. This is from the UCI website.

        1. What is a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE)?

A TUE is special permission to use a prohibited substance or method for a legitimate medical condition.

Riders, like everyone else, may have illnesses or condition which requires a particular medication. If a substance contained in your medication or the method used appears on the Prohibited List, you must apply for a TUE before starting the treatment. After the UCI Therapeutic Use Exemption Committee (TUEC) has reviewed your application, you may be given authorization to obtain treatment.

The UCI TUEC is composed of independent experts in the fields of clinical sports and exercise medicine. It is the CADF, independent entity mandated by the UCI to run the bulk of its anti-doping program, that provides administrative support to the TUEC,

  4. The “Moore Gaze”. Unfortunately, as a dog show judge he would be feeling up the private parts of doggies. So I vote no.

  5. I’ve thought for many years that when the term “professional” is added with “sports” that its time to run the other way. Adding money to athletic events brings out too many perversions to list. The worst being, watching someone ride a bike instead of doing it yourself. Although I do have to admit that having sports stadiums in cities like Detroit can help revitalize them. But so would more bike paths and parks and playgrounds coupled with better law enforcement training.

      1. Last Week Tonight did a show on economic incentives that governments, city, county, and state, give to businesses, including sports teams. They couldn’t fine a positive story supported by data. They are essentially tax dollar give away programs with weak and unenforceable contract requirements. Make me laugh every time someone says that we should get government out of business. Hear, hear! This Amazon 2nd headquarters is a prime example. By the way, I didn’t know you could have 2 headquarters.
