Trumped

I’m with Charlie Pierce and David Graham on this one.

We have legitimate constitutional tools for removing an unfit president from office. Anonymous preening chickenshittery is not one of them. It’s a little late to try selling us on the notion that you’re just the piano player in this whorehouse.

“A very principled position,” me arse. Sack up and speak up — in the daylight — or shut up.

    No kidding.

  2. DownhillBill Says:

I’m not so sure. Ratcheting up the pressure on the Dumpster may be helpful to push him (even further) over the edge. The Onion IMO accurately predicted what it would take to get McConnell to even consider impeachment (masturbating on the flag at the Tomb Of The Unknowns). Senator Igor of Kentucky (R-Batshitville) ain’t gonna let it happen.

Now we find ourselves, horrified yet again, watching the Tangerine Trash Can Fire attacking the journalist who established his credibility in a similar situation a few decades ago. “Those who do not remember history are condemned to repeat it” as Santayana said. Being called mendacious by Trump is like being called tasteless by a tapeworm.

Apologies to any tapeworms offended by the comparison.

    • JD Dallager Says:

As Mark Twain is reputed (sources not released!) to have said: “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.”

    • Patrick O'Grady Says:

I think it just gives the sonofabitch another chew toy, the latest in a long series of distractions to draw the nation’s limited attention away from the GOP’s chop shop’s ongoing effort to strip the Republic for salable parts.

“Never mind the tool who’s going to make the Roberts 5 an unassailable 6, honey, look at the funny orange man. Watch him turn purple!”

    • Pat O'Brien Says:

I have the same pocket Constitution that Kavanaugh was consulting during the second hearing. All federal employees were give one years ago. The 4th amendment is pretty clear and written in language the layman can understand. The NSA data gathering was in clear violation of the law on warrantless searches and seizures, as in millions of them, and Kavanaugh knew it. These hearing are a fucking joke. Just confirm the guy, and go home and spew more bullshit so you can get re-elected.

  3. Pat O'Brien Says:

The Time Op-Ed editor screwed the pooch on this one. And Woodward should release the tapes, all of them. As far as McConnell, Ryan, and Trump go, all I can say is this.

  4. Flahute Says:

Only problem I have with impeachment or 25th Amendment measures is that it would put Mike Pence in charge … and I think he can accomplish even more damage to liberal/progressive causes.

    • larryatcycleitalia Says:

I have that same fear – but Fat Nixon will only be removed if the midterm elections swing the pendulum back to the left. In this situation Q-tip and his henchmen would be somewhat constrained and I think they’d have zero chance in 2020. Finally, as awful and creepy as Pence is, it doesn’t seem he’s as greedy and crooked as the Trump Crime Family so there’s that.

    • Patrick O'Grady Says:

Yeah, the citizenry really left us mired up to the hubs in this one.

Impeachment and the 25th Amendment require extraordinary effort from both the executive and legislative branches. As we’ve seen, they’re not willing to break a moist sweat over much beyond feathering their own nests.

Even if Congress so roused itself, there’s no guarantee that the GOP would take a step back. President Pence would continue business as usual. I refer you to Bush v. Gore, when the smarties felt that given the appalling circumstances of that election Dubya would govern from the center. Yeah, right.

At bare minimum, if Congress were anything other than a sinkhole for dark money, it should be tying this lot in knots so they can’t go to the shitter without finding a sheaf of subpoenas where the paper towels are supposed to be.

That way you dodge the extreme remedies, and it is to be hoped, the worst executive behavior, until such time as a workable plurality of the electorate comes to its senses.

Is my lack of optimism showing? Say, what’s on TV?

      • Pat O'Brien Says:

What”s on TV? Say, you are in a funk about this. Try watching “Hot Ones” on utube. That will cure your blues.

      • Herb from Michigan Says:

Well POG we are in agreement once again which won’t buy us a bottle of Ripple in a whorehouse. d.trump is only a diversion whilst Con-servatives pillage and plunder and you are right about $$ wearing the pants in politics. The more history I read, the more truth comes out. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Washington (and for that matter most state legislatures) are hopelessly mired in corporate bribes passing as “lobbying”. Grim thoughts? Aye. Although not a religeous sort, I’m very close to agreeing to “kill em all and let almighty God sort em out” as a political solution to conservatives cloaking themselves as Republicans.

  5. SO Says:

    Trying to be an optimist.

Best I can come up with is, thank Odin, Zeus, and Vishnu combined that trump wasn’t manning the conn in 1861, 1929, or 1941.
