BRAIN Farts: January 2021

• Editor’s note: From now until New Year’s Day I’ll be popping up selected “Shop Talk” strips from this year’s run of Bicycle Retailer and Industry News.

Today, let’s look back at New Year’s Eve 2020. The Mud Stud and Dude have had themselves a good year in the ol’ bike shop. Maybe a little too good, as it turns out.

  1. Right on, PO’G!
Free enterprise, Adam Smith’s “Invisible Hand”, and the profit motive can drive a spectrum of beneficial, unforeseen, and sometimes regrettable outcomes, eh??!! 🙂

    1. It reminds me of a bit in “Not Fade Away” by Jim Dodge. George Gastin is on a road trip and meets the greatest traveling salesman in the world, who is hitchhiking (and freezing) after having sold his coat, shirt, tie, socks, and shoes to an oilfield roughneck who had a date and wanted to look spiffy.

“Didn’t he want the pants, too?” inquires George.

“Oh, he inquired about the trousers, but I couldn’t risk the possibility of being incarcerated for indecent exposure,” replies the salesman.

The Stud went and sold his trousers too.

  2. Your cartoons are the best. They sucked me into the orbit. Be well my long lost friend. I hope some day we can meet.

    1. Thanks, TJ. A lot of people stop at “They sucked.” Always glad to hear a gentler review.

You be well, too, and we’ll stumble into each other somewhere along that long and winding road.
