Loafer

Get it while it’s hot.

Behold the first loaf from our “new” $40 Toastmaster Bread Box, acquired on eBay. The Wirecutter boyos can keep their $300 Zojirushi Virtuoso Plus with my compliments. Banzai! Banzai! Banzai!

In other news, retirement is proceeding swimmingly. This morning I arose late, ground beans, brewed coffee, made tea, toast, and oatmeal, did the dishes, emptied the litter box, took out the trash, refilled the bird feeders, shooed Herself out the door to chauffeur Herself the Elder to a couple appointments, scratched Miss Mia’s back, and glanced over the news, about which the less said the better.

Soon, the healthful outdoor exercise. Herself and I went for an hourlong run yesterday and nothing hurt any more than it should, so I think my back may have finally realigned itself (knock on wood).

Joe Walsh was right.

  1. have you ever done any pilates? i’ve been doing it for a few years and it does wonders for my back. joe walsh is always right.

    1. My late chiropractor (when she was still on time) advised yoga. I may have to finally fill that prescription. I’ll look into the pilates too. This last round of back issues was an awful lot like work: painful, unpleasant, and unrewarding.

      1. I have no idea if the Pilates on Apple Fitness Double Plus Extreme Fitness with Extra Cheese is legit or not, but it has done wonders for my back and shoulders. Seems to be a mix of stretching and yoga and core stuff. Also seems like you could give it 16 different names, and market it to 16 different demographics. What comes after “middle-aged “? Three-quarters aged? Left out in the sun too long aged? Found on the side of the road aged? Whatever it is that I am, it seems to be about my speed.

  2. We have a Zojirushi rice cooker. It works amazingly well. That said, I think I’ve made steel cut oats in it than rice over the course of its residence here at Ice Station Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.

I will second the yoga recommendation. It’s help me to fix all the problems with all that repetitive motion on the bike.

    1. We have a bargain-basement Hamilton Beach cooker that does pretty much what we ask of it, which is not much, mostly Mexican rice. I would like something better, especially for brown and wild rice, but I’m gonna wait until this one croaks.

  3. That Joe Walsh quote speaks volumes. You might want to ch3 k out a physical therapist. Maybe that one that helped you with your ankle could show you some exercises to keep that pelvis straight. They sure helped me.

    1. Alas, I never got PT for that ankle. I busted it just in time for Round One of Bug Lockdown and thought I would steer clear of the medical profession and all who sail in her for a while. I did a few exercises I remembered from the first time I broke it back in 1983, and stayed away from running for a good long while.

I did get PT on that left middle finger I dislocated back in 2009. Boy, was that ever the right thing to do. It’s as good as new, while the thumb I dislocated years early ain’t worth a tinker’s damn.

  4. Retirement has been interesting. Social Security lost my Medicare B application, so I had to redo it. The retirement plan at LANL involves three entities coordinating: LANL, Empyrean, and Eon-Hewlett. You can guess the rest. Still waiting for my retirement health care to kick in. Finally got Med A and Med B in place.

    1. I’m not signed up for Part B yet; I still have United Healthcare and a health savings account through Herself and Sandia. And of course for anything truly dire I have the Smith & Wesson.

  5. PO’G: Since I’m not a philosophical guy, but one more into the meat and potatoes; How many pounds of your organic ground wheat flour will this baby allow you to consume before Ground Hog Day? 🙂

It sure looks good!!!!!! Well done, mi amigo! 🙂

    1. Hmm, lessee here … I’m no mathematician, but I do about two loaves a week, 2.75 cups of whole-wheat flour per loaf, and we got about three weeks until Groundhog Day. So I think I’ll burn through one 5-pound bag before Punxsutawney Phil gives us The Word.

  6. Interesting read. Can extrapolate to other products. Scientific American is reporting that 60% of K95 masks are counterfeit. If you only want the cheapest of everything, that’s exactly what you’ll get. Anyway, happy Saturday! Stepping out to sled with the kiddos before hockey. Hope everyone gets some fresh O2 and Vitamin D today!

The Bikes That Last Four Months

    1. And it’s not just that they’re bad bikes to start with. Often they’re poorly assembled. Big-box dudes with little to no experience performing final assembly with vise grips and claw hammers. Forks on backasswards, cables running ever’ whichaway, brake pads and/or chains going into the spokes. Good times. Maybe not. Mac deserves sainthood.
