Staying ready

Fire on the mountain? Not today.

Call me crazy, but I’m thinking the wildfire risk is a little lower than usual today.

After our little snow event the other day I put fenders on the Soma Double Cross just in case the running got boring, which it did. This meant the 42mm Soma Cazadero tires had to come off, and I spazzed around a bit trying to come up with something in a 38mm.

The DC with fenders makes an excellent snow repellent.

Kenda Kwicker? Nope, 32mm. Michelin Transworld Sprint? 35mm and I never liked ’em anyway.

Finally I grabbed an old set of 37mm WTB All Terrain wire-beads and slapped those on, in the process being reminded why they were in a corner of the garage instead of on rims. Mother dog, were them sumbitches ever a bear to mount.

But it was worth it to get fenders on the DC. Whenever it snows The Duck! City scatters this reddish sand all over every horizontal surface. Could be pulverized granite; could be chile powder. I have no idea. But it gets onto and into everything, and if you get any on your kit, it will be there for the better part of quite some time.

So, yeah, fenders. Worked like a charm. So much so that the forecast for the next week is sunny, with temps in the 40s and 50s.

I think the County uses cinders from over in the Jemez.

Still riding the Flite I see. Me too. I haven’t found anything better

O, indeed. Selle Italia has gotten a lot of my money over the years. Flites or Turbos on nearly everything. And Sidi shoes. Those things last longer than a Swedish art-house film.

    “Fenders on the DC.”

Geesh, PO’G, when I read that my mind skipped to 78RPM and I naively but hopefully thought you were talking about what the mature, seasoned, statesperson-like elected officials in DC had finally realized what might move this nation forward.

My goof! Apologies to all! 🙂

Oy. Those people. That’s where we should build the Wall. Around DeeCee. Put a plexiglass lid on it and suck all the air out. Preserve the contents as a warning to future generations, if any.

The bomb for mounting tough tires. Easy peasy.

a bike without eyebrows is like a face without fenders. or something like that.

Do you think after all those years of stretching tight sew-ups over sticky rims, and pissing and moaning about inconsistent size standards, that I’d want to break such a fine tradition and use Schwalbe sidewall grease? Besides, it has cadmium, pthalates, Nickle and DEHP (all the things that are probably in DingDongs and Totinos pizzas), that means you can’t eat with your fingers while mounting tires.

I hate needing to change out tires or rims before a ride. There’s something about having my steed all ready to go after donning the kit.

With snow in mind, I stumbled across a pair of Nokian Extremes (the spiky ones) at one of my local thrift stores. I mounted those suckers up and am now impatiently waiting for some cold weather to blow in and embellish us with freezing precipitation. Although like the just-bought-a-shovel syndrome, we probably won’t see snow until mid-April when it will just melt all over.
