‘Welcome to Albuquerque’

The Sandias as seen from Juniper Hill Road NE.
Not pictured: reckless motorist or knife-wielding maniac.

Boy, the folks at Visit Albuquerque must hate seeing Simon Romero’s byline in The New York Times.

Unless they all got shanked by the Psycho on the Bike-o.

Just another weekend on the mean streets of The Duck! City.

    1. Sigh. “Dune” again. Anybody making a reliable stillsuit these days? No, not one of the Chinese knockoffs. If I gotta drink my own B.O. and wee-wee I want a Fremen-issue model. Or a Patagonia. They make theirs out of recycled Sardaukar and Harkonnens.

Speaking of water, John Fleck is my go-to read for water news around these parts.

  1. It’s a damn shame somebody didn’t have a frame pump handy to insert through the rotating wheels of the psycho on the bike-o. “I’m not sure how it happened officer but his frame pump seemed to just bounce into one of his wheels and he fell, right over the wall onto the pathway below. I guess the knife flew up in the air and just landed in the middle of his back. It must have hit pretty hard because the knife sure went in a long way.”

The word in the desert southwest is that in the future people will have the remind themselves not to cook with too much garlic the day before they need to process and refill their reclaimed water tanks.

Perhaps Starbucks has already planned for the future: Reclaimed Coffee Lattes and Smoothies.

    1. Friend of mine gave me a kukri with a foot long blade. Its kinda intimidating but also kinda pretty. Similar to one that one of my best friends in college, Geoff Spencer (no relation) once put partway through a door during a very drunken party at the U of Rochester. His dad served in SE Asia (like my uncle did) and brought it home.

Ahh, the old frame pump through the front spokes trick.

      1. Yep. Cinzano!

I had a big dive knife once. I hitchhiked from Fairbanks down to SE Alaska with it strapped to the side on my pack. I never thought until later that maybe sometimes I didn’t get rides because of that knife. That was back when the movie First Blood was a recent release and I looked a lot like Stallone. Well at least I thought the chicks thought I looked like him anyway.

    1. I don’t want anything to do with knife-fighting. I don’t care what they say about chicks digging scars. Some little dude with a big knife is headed my way, he’s gonna need more than a BMX bike to catch me.

    2. Friend of mine is a retired Los Angeles cop. Said the worst thing that happened to him was being stabbed. And he had also been shot. I guess at six foot four, he was a big target.

Gave it up after all that B.S. He is one of the trainers now at my gun club.

I have not been carrying even though I have the little plastic card. I don’t like going there. But maybe.

      1. Wonder if Phil Wood makes a kukri sheath attachment for braze-ons? in the mean time, you know what I’ll be carrying.

      2. Can’t stop thinking about that kukri. Bet that would be good enough to stop a charging Rottweiler. Used to appreciate how good those were for my sprint, but I’m way too old and decrepit for that now.

  2. Regarding knives and carving I seem to now be craving a good steak or two.

I used to live in Bakersfield for a time. It actually was a great place to ride. Well at least if you liked the heat in the summer (blistering hot), the fog in the winter (I hope this is the road that I want), and you didn’t breathe too much (airborne agricultural dust, fertilizer and oilfield flare offs). But I recall some great rides up in the hills to the east. There was only fire and brimstone to the west for about 50 miles.
