I thought the GOP’s love for Reagan was the absolute limit of their golden calf moment. And we can agree to disagree on his policies, but there’s a general consensus that he embraced the camera as well as any of his peers. On the surface, a likable chap.

Now do Trump. He’s been running for Prez since the ’80s. He’s been calling in to talk radio and Fox for three decades. And yet, can you immediately think of anything remotely inspiring, memorable, or succinctly capturing a policy position? There’s American carnage, and then … crickets?
So why the fuck is there a love affair with this guy? Why would someone who never thought about buying a Reagan/Bush hat go out and get an entire Trump/Vance wardrobe?
This is so beyond Left vs Right politics. This is a cult culture that we had successfully avoided for a quarter millennium. And if 49% of us were agog over a Washington, an Ike, or either Roosevelt, I could understand it.
He can’t walk a dog, drive a car, successfully fold an umbrella, or drink water from a glass. But somehow he has become Jesus, Dirty Harry, and the Beatles for more than half of the middle aged white guys in this country.
It’s a mystery to me too. I recall Kurt, one of the barflies in Louis C.K.’s 2016 show, “Horace and Pete,” saying that the Asshole’s Acolytes didn’t want to fix anything, they just wanted to burn it all down.
“If we vote for him, that just means we want to go down,” he says. “So let us go down.”
This is from the last time he was president. He would say the same thing today in LA. The result of having a very large brain, nonfunctioning but large.
Stupid Oughta Hurt. And it will soon for many of those who voted for him and his “basket of deplorables”. Unemployment will rise. Worker pay will stall and/or be cut. Prices of goods will NOT go down. Need some concrete poured or a new roof? Good luck getting a fair price or even having workers show up. Qualified and veteran government workers will take early retirement or be fired. Many government services we take for granted now will be festered and the rich will get…..wait for it…..richer. Will the blue collar workers who so happily wore the MAGA (Morons Are Governing America) hats ever admit they were stupid? Don’t bet on it. Yet, we’ll survive the 4 years and the American Experiment will blunder on into the future having wasted more precious time and having failed (again) to advance the important qualities of life for the many who need it most.
