Sly Stone left the building today in — of all places — Los Angeles. He was 82.
That Next World Orchestra. Whoo. I’m in no hurry to catch ’em live, if that word even applies … but still, damn. Dance to the music, y’all.

Bummer. No good news out of LA today, is there.
Those folks are dancing to the wrong damn music, for sure.
Sly was special in many ways and ahead of his time racially and musically.

He was. Big part of my cranial playlist Back in the Day®.
Did you see Questlove’s 2021 documentary “Summer of Soul?” Sly and the Family Stone were in there. Just killer.
And the dude could make a point without making a sound. From the NYT:
Dental implant surgery today. Owwww.
Ow, wow, yow, zow. My sympathies. I dodged a bullet at my cleaning last week. Just a scrape-and-varnish. Didn’t even try to upsell me on a whitening or anything.
there is no such thing as the singular perfect song, but there are tons that are perfect in their own way.
and I’m always amazed by those who struck perfection, and then kept on going.
cuz if I had written Everyday People, I would have quit that same day. Just quit. What’s the point? Been to the top of the mountain, why are you going to hike the foothills after that?
O yeah. Clock right the hell out. “That’s it, pay me. I’ll be on that beach over there with the tall cold beverage.”
He kept going because he had more messages to give. Or, he just wanted to groove. Or, sometimes you get a groove and a good story in one song. That turns it into a first class, top drawer, and gold plated ear worm, like “Everyday People.” I bet every one here can sing the chorus, maybe the whole song, or at least the hook from memory. I ran into another one like that a few weeks ago in a jam session. Never heard it before. Forgive me for sticking this one in your ear. And, look at the band and vocalists backing him. Just a few familiar faces.
Yeah, “just a few familiar faces.” Hijole, etc.
Did you ever catch the all-star Roy Orbison Cinemax concert, “A Black & White Night?” Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, J.D. Souther, Jackson Browne, k.d. lang, Jennifer Warnes, Bonnie Raitt, Tom Waits, and Elvis Presley’s TCB Band. Also, of course, The Man Himself, The Big O. Filmed in one take, bing bang boom.
No I haven’t, but I will fix that tomorrow. K.D. Lang? Oh buddy. I listen to this, forgive my gotta be sexist old ass. and I see a black evening gown full of a dream. Reality is just as good, just different. You sing with Tony and you have paid your dues.
