More rain, which, yay. And sunshine this morning, which, likewise.
It’s pleasant upon awakening to reach for socks instead of sunscreen. And to have nodded off to a stout rain backed by thunder! Lightning! And the rest of that Eddie Floyd-Steve Cropper lyric, too.
We basically got an entire September’s worth of precip’ in the past 48 hours. Morning temps are in the 50s. HVAC/irrigation systems are on pause.
As is cycling. I was feeling a bit overtrained, though I’m not training for anything. So I’ve spent the past few days being a pedestrian, either running or walking the local trails network.
Anyway, just because I have three bikes with fenders — hold on, make that four, just outfitted the Double Cross yesterday — doesn’t necessarily mean I want to use ’em.
Because next it will be knickers, and then arm warmers, and before you know it — winter!
Let’s get past fall first. Whaddaya say?

Pretty much same up here and probably for the same reasons, given the short distance between Shootaquerque and Fanta Se. Nice cool weather and plenty of rain in the last few days. The place actually looks green…for a while.
I’m in no danger of overtraining. Just finally got back to where I was before the Achilles tendon issue. Maybe I can fit into my size 32 shorts again?
I just want it cool enough to keep the damn mosquitos inactive. I have lived here for 45 years and mosquitos have not been an issue except down by the river. And, that was just for a month or two tops. This year our patio has been off limits at dawn and dusk since May unless you bathe in DEET. We just stayed inside. Maybe being the hottest month and year on record has something to do with it?
The skeeters have been a plague here for a few seasons now. Lawns, shrubs, standing water, check, check, and check. At least one house in the cul-de-sac has an in-ground pool. Another is patrolled by a giant dog with a kiddy pool for a water bowl. I expect there are water “features” galore within biting distance.
Also, stair-stepped arroyos, a.k.a. diversion channels, abound. They route any runoff from the Sandia foothills down to the Rio. There’s a big one right behind those trees in the photo up top. A couple-three others within a stone’s throw. All flatten out briefly to allow runoff to drain through grates into subterranean chutes, and once those get plugged by mud, hey presto! West Nile starter kit.
Just going out to change the hummingbird feeders is like running bare-assed and slathered in catsup through Dracula’s castle.
Damn Patrick, you can sure wrangle those words! Even Dracula hisself would smile on that one! Chapeau!
Ah POB tis perhaps the lawns and shrubs ye all planted over the years along with some inadvertent standing water. Presto-mosquitoes. My friends in Colorado now have em voraciously eating them away since everyone in their burg MUST have lawns and non-native plants galore. And the water to keep their greenery alive no matter how dry things get. I too am looking forward that first real “killing” frost. Mostly because of the yellow jackets and stink bugs that are going nuts right now.
No lawns or standing water, but a few shrubs. Now that you mention it, the mosquitos are always bad right around the golf course because of grass and ponds. But, even just a 1/4 mile away, they were not a problem. Not until this year.
