Paging Dr. Thompson

Oh, the weather outside is frightful. Just ask Turkenstein, who prefers a spot on my drawing board to a squat in the snow.

Oh, the weather outside is frightful. Just ask Turkenstein, who prefers a spot on my drawing board to a squat in the snow.

The Brakeman, a.k.a. Dr. Demento, Dr. Doom and Dr. Christopher T. Thompson, is up for sentencing today in the Mandeville Canyon road-rage case, if I recall correctly. VeloNews.com, which covered the trial from gavel to gavel, should have a story up tout de suite with my doppelgänger Patrick Brady on the case.

I don’t know about you, but I’m very interested to see what the judge lays on him. He has 10 years coming, and I’d like to see him serve every second of it.

Meanwhile, nobody will be mistaking Bibleburg for Southern California anytime soon. It was 8 degrees when I arose, and we are anticipating a “high” of 15. The Turk’ has asked to go outside exactly once, and after about five minutes of frigid freedom he’s parked on a sunny spot on my drawing board.

• Late update: Dr. Frankendick’s sentencing has been postponed to next year. The BikingInLA website reports that the continuance was due to — wait for it — a swine-flu-triggered lockdown at the slammer holding the good Herr Doktor. And to think they said irony was dead.

Eight degrees Fahrenheit is cold. So’s 15. I’m not sure I could tell the difference. Stay in. Ride the torture device.

As for the good doctor in Cali, there’s just no excuse for what he did. I’m sure the doctor’s impulse to teach a lesson is the most common thought that non-cycling motorists have when cyclists are in front of them. Thank God most motorists don’t act on such thoughts. Then there are the motorists who don’t think at all and aren’t paying attention:

So the Mandeville Canyon Madman gets to spend Christmas home under the tree? Too bad.

Snowing here all day, 17 deg, and the roads are either hardpack or icy slush. Sorry to all the purists out there, but I drove to work.

    It’s 69 degrees in Phoenix…

    Opus the Poet:

No, he won’t get to spend Xmas with his family. His cell block was quarantined because of the H1N1 virus so nobody gets to go home for Xmas. Plus since he’s being held without bail because of the nature of his crime he wouldn’t have been released on furlough any way.

And we are freezing really really cold with temps in the low 40s and rain here in N TX.

Oops, that “freezing” up there should have had a line through it, but the strikeout HTML tag didn’t work.

For something more upbeat, check out this link, courtesy of Maynard Hershon’s web page. Great pics of 1980’s racing, including an appearance by Eddy Merckx in the ‘84 Coors Classic.

Last pic is of Jennie Longo. In a case of crass embarrassment, I met her at the 2008 Tour de Los Alamos, where I was course marshalling at the main Laboratory checkpoint, but didn’t know who she was!

I wonder if the bad Dr. Thompson (as opposed to HST, PhD) will receive the karma of a bad case of H1N1 to go along with his time in the LA Jail.

    Khal,
thanks for the great link! I was living in Boulder then, but as a poor and unaware grad slave, err student, wasn’t much into cycling at the time. As a “mature” female rider now, Jeannie is my hero!

10 degrees down here in the lovely Pojoaque valley this AM. After a frigid spin around Santa Fe on Wed it’s back onto the trainer for me today.

Ten degrees. Egads. Its a few degrees warmer here in bombtown, but I think the Tour de Nowhere or a bundled-up run will have to make do.
