Trashman exits, stage left

Trashman stars in Subvert Comics

The cover of Subvert Comics, one of Trashman’s cover-to-cover appearances in underground comics.

Hasta la vista to Spain Rodriguez, creator of “Trashman” and one of the original underground-comics all-stars alongside Robert Crumb, Gilbert Shelton, S. Clay Wilson and the rest of ’em.

He died at 72 following a battle with (what else?) cancer. The old motorcycle hood couldn’t kick an ass that big and bad, though it seems clear that he tried, fighting the oppressor to the end.

Never saw this one but do remember R. Crumb. I still remember how hard it was to track down a t-shirt with his famous “Get Your S__t Together” cartoon with the two turds walking arm-in-arm. Just HAD to have one in my rebellious years, only to have my mother destroy the “vulgar thing” after pulling it out of the washing-machine and realizing what was printed on it.

Larry, Spain wasn’t on my personal podium, underground-cartoon-wise. Liked his work, but never loved it.

For me, it was Robert Crumb for absurdity; Gilbert Shelton (“Freak Brothers”) and Rand Holmes (“Harold Hedd”) for humor; and Robert Williams (“Coochy Cooty”) and S. Clay Wilson (“Checkered Demon”) for reasons that elude me.

And leave us not forget Dan O’Neill (“Odd Bodkins”), Vaughn Bode (“Cheech Wizard”) and Bobby London (“Dirty Duck”). London had kind of a E.C. Segar/George Herriman thing going on, but Christ only knows what Bode was up to. That dude was bent. Also hysterical.
