Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat

"Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat" was the title of one of Bill Watterson's "Calvin and Hobbes" collections. It's also a pretty apt description of Turkish.

“Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat” was the title of one of Bill Watterson’s “Calvin and Hobbes” collections. It’s also a pretty apt description of Turkish. When he’s awake, anyway.

The Hobbes to my Calvin enjoys a snooze in the sunshine.

Speaking of which, were you aware that there’s a documentary about Bill Watterson and his creations? True fact — “Dear Mr. Watterson” premiered yesterday, and NPR carried an item about it this morning.

“Calvin and Hobbes” is one of my favorite strips.  I have a dozen or so of Watterson’s books, and tried to get an interview with him back when I worked for The New Mexican (through a minion, he declined, as he does pretty much any invitation to chat with the press; smart fella).

I made the mistake of listening to the NPR piece, and now I’m going to have to thumb through a few of Watterson’s books, goddamnit. If you’d like to take a bumpy trip down memory lane on your toboggan, with your best friend for company, you can read “Calvin and Hobbes” online at GoComics.com.

We love (and miss) C & H too. Frazz has taken up the spot these days. The connection to cycling is just a bonus, but Jef Mallett kindly immortalized CycleItalia in a small way back in 2006, even sending us the original sketch of the strip our logo appeared in.

    • Patrick O'Grady Says:

Jef is a right guy. We had a beer together some years back when he was in town to speak to a group of tri-geeks, and we’ve exchanged original ‘toons. His are funnier than mine.

I read Frazz, too. In the newspaper!
I gave my nephew C&H collections at Christmas – I was thrilled. I found a gift that he enjoyed and I mined that for years – Opus, Pearls Before Swine, featured as gifts, too.
    Turkish sunbathing – perfection!

    • Patrick O'Grady Says:

In the newspaper? They still have those things where you are? Sheesh — lucky gal. We just have The Gazette.

      • Libby Says:

Frazz appears in The Times Union, Albany, NY, a Hearst newspaper.

Same here, we have some bird-cage liner (and a mighty thin one at that) called the Sioux City Journal. We gave up on that when they started telling us we got zero credit for stopping the delivery when we weren’t in town. They’d ditched Frazz long ago anyway. Now we get International New York Times via Kindle…but they have only one comic each edition and it’s too damn small to see anyway. Gotta go to the comic website to keep up with Frazz. Looking forward to seeing the C & H doc, thanks for sharing that.

POG, don’t diss the INDY or it could disappear too.

Loved C&H. Always put a smile on my face, regardless of how the rest of the world sucked.

Nowdays we only get the online Journal and NYT, so we lack the Sunday funnies, which are in the print version. Dang.
