If I may, I think a Chinese philosopher figured this out a long time ago, and he explains better than I ever could.
“When rich speculators prosper
while farmers lose their land;
when government officials spend money on weapons instead of cures;
when the upper class is extravagant and irresponsible
while the poor have no where to turn;
all of this is robbery and chaos.
It is not in keeping with the Tao.”
Tao te Ching – translation by Stephen Mitchell
Not wanting to be pessimistic, but preferring to be called an “enlightened pragmatist”, I have a slight modification to the old wisdom: “Those who don’t read/understand history are doomed to repeat it”.
It’s: “Even those who read/understand history are doomed to repeat it”.
I know what you mean John. Lao Tsu wrote that over 2000 years ago, to the best of my knowledge, and it still applies today. So I guess that fits into the “S squared D squared” philosophy I learned in the Army. Same shit, different day.
Nature or nurture? I assume the “Old Boy” would say it is both in harmony with each other like the bending of a bow. That is a tough question, and whether an excess of one can make up for a deficiency of the other is certainly debatable.
But, you know what Larry’s wife says, and she is a professor of philosophy. I just took a few undergrad courses as electives, because they looked interesting.
You all know what my wife says…..
If the US electorate is dumb enough to let this crap happen, they get the government and leaders they deserve. How long before enough people start demanding a NEW New Deal? It’s high time we had one!
I definitely agree that we get the government we deserve. That’s the problem with the Tea Party. They’re maybe 10% right. There’s a lot of waste in any large organization. But they cut off their nose to spite their face by turning everything into a crusade against the Boogie Man.
Wash DC is broken. But so are all fifty states and most every county. Because most of us are idiots. Mcdonalds, American Idol, People magazine, and both political parties are counting on that.
When something’s broke, you fix it, you don’t blow it up.
Hope she survived the storm on Monday night. My plane practically flew into Knoxville upside down and there was an ozone smell in the cabin after a few lightning flashes. Finally landed after midnight, got the rental, and drove through horizontal rain and constant Zots up to Oak Ridge. Got to sleep at 0300 and the conehead meeting started at 0730. I’m getting too old for this shit.
Some had it worse. One guy who had to give a talk at 0900 had his plane diverted to Nashville when it circled so long over Tyson that it ran low on gas. He drove all night and got to Oak Ridge in time to shower and show up for Showtime.
Sheesh. Tornado alley indeed. But its green here. Really, really green!
I was told back in 2008 that if we elected Preznit Obama we’d have socialism. Well goddamnit… I voted for him in 2008 and 2012 and I STILL don’t have any socialism! Some motherfucker lied to me!

How different would things be if the Wampanoags had asked to see Myles Standish’s papers?

Nice stuff Pat:

So…..is it nature and/or nurture? 🙂

John.
My personal version:
“Those who fail to study History are doomed to never get the joke.”
Perhaps the GOP is seeking to recreate the conditions that brought about the French Revolution?
