Happy winter solstice to thee and thine. Once again I will not be attending the annual illumination of the inner chamber at Newgrange — the 5,000-year-old monument is not among the locations served by Air Subaru — but I will be there in spirit.
The weather wizards say we can expect a high in the upper 40s today here in the Duke City, but it won’t be long now before this space is devoted to bitching about the intolerable heat. To everything there is a season.

There was a Car Talk puzzler once that asked, “What is the shortest day of the year?” Seems simple, but hint: it’s not today, nor yesterday, nor tomorrow.

Shortest day o’ the year = spring switch to daylight savings. We lose an hour, so it’s only 23 hours!

If the reason(s) for solstice and the uniqueness of our “small blue dot” planet and solar system intrigue(s) you, I recommend “The Wonders of the Solar System” by Brian Cox. He also has two other books on the wonders of life and the universe. Wonderful reads for the curious.
Meantime, great to start another lap around the sun!
Happy Solstice to all! 🙂

The Byrd’s song reminds me of Chapter 29 of the Tao te Ching. New bottle for old wine, heh?
I guess I will just drink a O’Hara’s Celtic Stout and pretend I am in the Newgrange monument’s chamber.
Looks like two, maybe three, decent riding days after today, then the weather turns to shit again for the weekend. Haven’t been on the bike for a week. I will change that trend tomorrow.

First day of winter … Make sure you remember to let all of the summer air out of your bike tires, replace it with the Arctic variety. Helps decrease traction and increase rolling resistance. Good advice for cars as well.
