Tootsie Voodoo said I could lose the Darth Gimp boot and crutches, so I traded up for a lace-up brace that I can wear with socks and shoes.
I may have limped in just under the wire, too. Management was said to be mulling whether to reschedule all non-acute cases.
“Sorry, bub. Here’s a hacksaw. You’ll have to find your own peg and parrot. Next!”
Sounds like a great excuse to do the “Old Folks’ Boogie.”
So you know that you’re over the hill
When your mind makes a promise that your body can’t fill
Try and get a rise from an atrophied muscle,
And the nerves in your thigh just quivers and fizzles

Yea!!!!! Gimpy but not broken!
Baby steps, m’man. S’ all good.
You are gonna get a shoe over that?
Already have. First, a Teva sandal, and second, a Vasque Clarion boot. I just went outdoors for a 0.6-mile ride. Flat pedals. Felt real creepy. But so did the first rides with the broken collarbone(s) and dislocated finger/thumb.
Downsized to a low-rise Vasque Mantra, pulled off the front fender, and went out for some mo’. Mucho bettero, as we say south of the border. Two big miles. You can’t stop me!
Good fer you. I couldn’t get anything over the boot they harnessed me to back in 2016 when I had the Jones Fracture.
I went to a much thinner sock this morning. That should broaden my shoe-selection options. I don’t think I’m getting into a cycling shoe anytime soon, though.
Were you riding the Rivendell?
No, I went for the Soma Double Cross, with the swept-back Albatross bars. It’s a smaller frame, very upright position, and I wanted to make sure I could deal easily with all the bits and pieces of riding a two-wheeler in a partial state of collapse.
I might try the Soma Saga (canti) next. Or the Riv. I’d like to ride for maybe 45 minutes tomorrow, weather permitting.
I forgot about the city bike conversion of the DC. I might even do that with mine. Throw some 700×38 on it, biggest my rims will take, and some flat bars. I have some old Ultegra flat bar brake levers but shifters may be an issue.
Paul’s Thumbies and bar-end shifters will do the trick, albeit at a price. Rivendell has a ton of bar end/thumbshifter options too.
Thanks, Patrick, for the tips. Bar ends will do the trick and the LBS might have some for 10 speed in the obsolete parts drawer.
You can always do what I’m doing and go full retro, with friction bar-cons. I have ’em on three bikes and you’d be surprised how quickly you remember how to make ’em do the business.
Flat pedals win medals!!!!! Go PO’G!!!!
They sure feel odd after a steady diet of SPDs, JD. Still, I’m glad I put the flat pedals on the Double Cross some months back (I needed its SPDs for a review bike).
The rim-brake Soma Saga now has flats, too. And I might put flats on the old DBR mountain bike, because it could be nice to have its suspension fork and seatpost to minimize impacts as the infrastructure continues to crumble.
Great progress!
Just limping along into the future, Libby. And keeping the crutches and Darth Gimp boot where I can get to ’em if need be. Hope all’s well out your way.
Enjoy it while you can as my guess is ya’ll gonna be restricted to home soon enough since estimates are YOO-ESS-AAAY is about 3 weeks behind us here in It’ly in the Covid-19 derby.
Meanwhile, some Chinese virus experts came over here to help….can you imagine Don the Con welcoming that???
Can’t believe Pence, Falwell and the rest haven’t prayed the virus away by now. We’ll skip the obvious “Why would Gawd send the virus to the USA in the first place?” question, OK?
I dunno if the nitwits who are theoretically in charge over here have the stones to do anything beyond bailing out financial institutions and giant corporations.
“Here, have some Krugerrands for the panic room. Don’t forget the caviar and Champagne. Could be a rough ride.”
Localities and states seem to be the ones actually, like, you know, like, doing shit, an’ shit.
The locals can do all they want but remember they tried that here in Italy. When word got out the north would be quarantined people fled to the south, bringing the virus with them. The same thing will happen if Newsom closes CA or Cuomo closes NY.
Before 2016 we had people who would deal with these things nation-wide, now it’s every billionaire for himself and the schlubs who pay taxes will what, get $1000 of their own money back? That’ll show the virus who is the boss! MAGA!
Well here in the mitten state I smugly thought I had a sixer of Guinness squirreled away for emergency days like this. What!! It’s gone! Who would do such a thing…toilet paper or eggs I could understand them coming for. But not me Guinness. There is a small, slim, outside chance I might have drunk them all back in February when I and the rest of the world were happy go lucky.
