Masks and margaritas

I didn’t have a mask to keep bugs out of my teefers
on the descent of Tramway Road.

Firsts:

Hey, Spike, you missed a few flowers.

• Riding the bike without a mask. That was fun. I’ve been half-stepping it, draping a Buff around my neck, but yesterday I left it at home. I’m still all buffed up; I’m just not Buffed up. Ho, ho.

• Having people over for drinks. Yup. Couple friends from the ’hood who are likewise all shot up came by for strawberry margaritas and a bit of guacamole. We hung out on the patio, shooting the breeze and enjoying what little foliage Spike the Terrorist Deer found unpalatable.

Two little things, to be sure. But satisfying nonetheless after a very long year indeed. Next up: Dancing on Sundays!

Heh. At least it was nice out down there.

I got up to what is called the “IV Overlook” on Hyde Park Road today and kept watching the clouds get darker and darker. At the IV Overlook (9750 ft elevation, more or less and about 3 miles from the Ski Basin) it was getting really dark. So I decided to head back down the hill since when I turned around, it looked even darker behind me. I managed to get back to home base just as the shit really hit the fan with heavy thunderstorms. But no one up here is complaining about rain.

I have no idea where the term “IV Overlook” came from. There is a really nice granite boulder by the side of the road there and its 13 miles from the house, so I always called that place “Thirteen Mile Rock”. Today, I stopped briefly to say hello to the boulder and then got the heck outa there. Being stuck at altitude in a hailstorm in bike shorts and a summer jersey (happened to me in the Jemez once) is something I’d prefer not to do again.

It’s been trying to rain here all day and just can’t quite get it done. I think Hal and his pals up Weirdcliffe way are getting all our rain. He’s about ready to start digging a moat around his castle.

It dropped from about high sixties at the house to about 50. No idea how cold it is up on the big hill and glad I didn’t find out. Rain seems to have petered out.

Got ducks in our backyard, looks like the measuring the drapes, and we’re getting reports of the rest of the critters marching 2×2 towards the Poudre.

You and your guacamole. What’s next, a plastic bike? I better back off, cause my smarter and better looking half loves her some quac or avocados straight up. Never mind.

    • Patrick O'Grady Says:

Man, I loves me some guacamole. Real basic stuff, too, none of your fancy-schmancy disco guac’. Crushed avocado, a smidge of diced onion and tomato, salt, and lime. I whipped up a batch of pico de gallo salsa too, just ’cause.

Tonight we’ll just have sliced avocado and tomato with a little olive oil, salt and pepper.

If grabbing the bowl of guacamole off the table and licking every last morsel from the dish is wrong, then I don’t want to be right.

Once we can’t get to the dregs with a chip we break out a rubber spatula, and finally, the index fingers.

I gotta say, the biggest surprise to the quarantine lifestyle was that the InstaCart shoppers actually did a pretty good job picking avocados for us. Got maybe one bad one all of 2020. Every time I wonder how horrible of a parent I’m being, I remind myself that my 8 year old would rather have smashed avocado on whole wheat toast than a doughnut or a pop tart, so at least I got her that far in life.

I heard one from Jason Isbell.

Went into a store, one of the clerks said, you know you don’t have to wear a mask anymore, right?

I said, actually, I kind a like wearing the mask… Keeps people from recognizing me, you know, from all the Star Wars movies.

    • Patrick O'Grady Says:

Dude has a sense of humor to go along with all them musical chops. Darth Isbell and the Sith Lords? Who knew?

      • Pat O’Brien Says:

Darth Isbell and Tommy Skywalker. Speaking of singer/song writers, we just watched the 2018 Austin City Limits of John Prine. A great hour finished right with “Paradise.”

        • SAO' Says:

I pretty much pony up the annual PBS donation solely for the Austin City Limits back catalog. Not sure they make the whole thing available, but there’s always something good there.

I picked a heck of a day to ride up to the ski basin yesterday.
