Requiem for tin hat and gun

A St. Patrick’s Day thought for all those who’ll go no more waltzing Matilda.

    1. Yeah … I was thumbing through the old musical catalogue — “The Sergeant and Arthur McBride,” “Follow Me Up to Carlow,” and like that there — and all my usual faves just seemed too belligerent for “conditions on the ground,” as the fella says.

    2. It’s sad but not surprising that we have to use the modifier “latest” when referring to wars. Are we still winning in Venezuela?

(Please don’t tell Pete Hogsbreath that he can create campaign ribbons for all of these excursions. He’ll have Drone Commander First Class Theodore Shmedlappe, with 3 months time in service, looking like Dave Hackworth on retirement day.)

    3. // And those who give the orders are not the ones to die,
It’s Bell and O’Malley and the likes of you and I.//

Hits me every time. Oldest truth known to our species, and the hardest to remember each time the next great cause comes around.

      1. Not sure if this is still true, but that song was taught for many years as part of the English curriculum in German public schools.

We have a devastating Civil War, and we spend the next 175 years trying to deny that it ever happened. Germany, on the other hand, seems to have mostly leaned into their hard lessons learned. Not perfect, but trying.

  1. I was going to post the tubeyou of Lee Greenwood singing Missles over Esfahan* while the bagpipes wailed in the background but I couldn’t find the link.

*kind of like Buffett’s Stars over Alabama

A pleasant St. Patrick’s Day to you all ! May you all have fine weather for your riding.

    1. Thanks, señor. It was a tad breezy out of the north, but I managed a 20-miler nonetheless. Green jersey, socks, and bandana, and the sea-green panels on the down tube of the Soma Pescadero.

  2. Well, Happy St. Paddy’s Day! I would put a link to “The Parting Glass” but have done too many times. My jam friend Scott just finished a new song, and it’s upbeat with a good story. So, why not, with Patrick’s forgiveness instead of permission!
