Frank Beard has followed Dusty Hill backstage, leaving Billy Gibbons as the Last OG Standing in ZZ Top.
I don’t remember who put me hip to ZZ Top. Could’ve been my old newsie bro the M-dogg, back in our Bibleburg daze, after the release of their sixth album, “Degüello.”
Whatever. I soon backtracked through their catalog, adding “Tres Hombres” and “Tejas” to my box of road-trip tunes. “El Loco” would join them.
I never caught them live, but their MTV videos were killer. It’s always a pleasure to watch folks who enjoy their work.
It wasn’t always fun, of course. I recall one of the ZZs, asked for the secret to the trio’s longevity, replying: “Three tour buses.”
And Frank sure had his issues with the fabled party favors. The band took a three-year break while he got his shit together, which he did, as you can see from the video up top, a clip from the documentary “ZZ Top — That Little Ol’ Band From Texas.”
Billy, Dusty and Frank were my co-conspirators on many a road trip, and I’ll always be grateful for their company. Peace to Frank, his family, friends, and fans.
Just a guitar, bass guitar, and drums can rock. “I’m just looking for some tush.” Probably had some parents looking for the dictionary. It wouldn’t have helped back then.
“La Grange” is some mighty fine drivin’ music. Aw-haw haw haw haw. … Have mercy!
I think I had Deguello on 8 track. I thought Billy G’s guitar work was amazing. Some of their older stuff was awesome too. I didn’t care for anything after Deguello though. Never saw them live but my GF saw them in the Astrodome. I did see Sonvolt and Alvin Youngblood Hart cover “Heard it on the X’ at a bar here in town once.
I saw them live, sitting “front row” (there were no rows but no one was
Caught them live in Moncton a few years back. Great sound for 3 guys and very little modifying electronics. Frank chain smoked through the whole show. My brother in law played in a band a long time ago, and opened for them at Parlee Beach. He said he could see from side stage that Frank had a roadie crouched down behind the kit feeding him cigarettes.
Supposedly they played here in Pensacola for maybe the senior prom? Right before they hit the big-time. I’ll try to post a pic.
I guess you’ll have to Google it. Also the first known live recording from Pensacola is on YT.
