There’s snow in them thar hills

Snow? In January? who'da thunk it?
Snow? In January? who’da thunk it?

The weekend was a tad busy, and come Monday I had a minor case of the ass.

I wanted, needed, to go for a ride — especially since I have a couple of bikes that need reviewing in fairly short order — but my usual routes had become yawn-inducing, an affliction that surfaces from time to time, like malaria or herpes.

The weather had mostly been sunny and dry, so I decided to spend a couple hours dicking around on the trails in Palmer Park, and riding a fendered MonsterCrosser® on the bone-dry single-track proved a pleasant change of pace.

Good thing I got ’er done when I did, too. Because we awakened this morning to a heavy wet blanket of snow on the deck. Thus today’s exercise consisted mainly of upper-body work, to wit, shoveling.

I’m not complaining, though. This ongoing drought is no joke — come Thursday, we’re back to another stretch of sunny, windy and 50-something — and I fear for our silver maple, which shades my office window. It takes a lot of water to keep a big tree happy, and an inch or two of snow every couple of years won’t do the trick.

      1. Oooh. Yes, I remember reading that post. My doctors told me to stay very active and after my recent close brush with that reminder of my mortality, perhaps I am overdoing it by riding to work today in the snow. I suppose an elevated heart rate for 25 minutes this morning is not going to save me if I am unexpectedly examining the underside of a SuperDuty.

  1. Patrick, I also woke up to two inches of snow this morning. I live in Arizona, you know, South of Tucson albeit at 4600 feet. But white out snow? Bullshit. I called up the blonde with no brains and demanded my tax money back.

    1. Patrick, where are you again? Sonoita? Sierra Vista? Bisbee? Wherever, that’s just wrong. Snow in Arizona should be restricted to Flagstaff, to keep Snowbowl from making poo snow for skiers.

      1. Sierra Vista. Bisbee had 6 inches! Second big snowfall in a month. You know us down here; like you we will take our water any way we can get it. But it seems like all we get lately is record warm followed by record cold with snow.

      2. Wow … 6 inches in Bisbee? I can’t remember the last time we got that much snow here. Seems like a couple-three is a big deal these days. More than that, we go cross-country ski one of the neighborhood parks.

Likewise here as regards record hot and cold. I’m not much for either extreme in my dotage. I sure as hell don’t miss stumbling out to the woodpile on those windy, 10-below mornings outside Weirdcliffe.

    2. I was in Sierra Vista last March and it snowed on us. Will be there again at the end of this March. Annual PAC Tour Desert Camp. Please to have some sun and temps above 60?

      1. Sir, since we don’t like it anymore than you do, we will do our best to give you cloudless 70s. But you know what Heilein said, “climate is what we want; weather is what we get.”

“Ass” must be hard to explain to those non-native English speakers.

Having the ass is a bad thing.

    Getting some ass is good.

Kicking some ass is good, but kissing some is bad.

  3. Completely off topic (but still somewhat related since it does deal with cycling) is this little tidbit from the Lowlands of Europe:

The ONLY time I will watch either of these two vacuous, nincompoops at the same time….and I don’t even like Radiohead.

  4. Interesting weather? As my friend said, “good thing this climate change stuff is just a hoax, otherwise I’d be concerned”. We had two days of rain but today’s sunny, a ride this afternoon is sounding like a great idea. Then I need to get another blog post up over here
