Bay window

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (MDM) — I was sitting in a window at Mandalay Bay, taking a load off my aching puppies, and the hordes of show-goers trudging to and fro became so hypnotic that I broke out a camera and just let it run.

But why aren’t these people riding bicycles? It’s a bicycle show, yeah?

    1. If I might add a little to this comment, Hans Olson used to be Tom Waits drinking buddy. Also, one of the first songs he performed yesterday was “Nobody Wants You When You’re Down and Out.” Of course, I immediately thought of Marv Berkman.

    2. I keep meaning to buy a pedometer and log mileage. It’s 20 minutes plus from my room at the Luxor through the cumulo-nicotine clouds of the casino to the show at Mandalay Bay, where the real trudging begins. The messenger bag starts with about 12 pounds of gear and only gets bigger.

Hans Olson, hey? I’m not familiar with him, though I’ve seen Waits a couple of times (I expect he had quite a few drinking buddies). I’ll have to give him a listen.

Ah, Marv. The anniversary of his passing approaches. We shall not see his like again.

  1. Reminds me of walking through a major US airport. Some of those flabbies have not seen the better side of exercise in ten or more years.

    1. Lots of scooters in the casino, and I don’t mean Vespas. We’re talking mobility for the gravity-challenged here. And oy, am I ever over tattoos. I love cartoons, but not enough to actually become one.

  2. I enjoyed this Maddog short!
Stealing from reviews of a movie that reminded me of your video, “Embracing naturalism, O’Grady has produced pure cinema that is contemplative but never static.”
I liked the walking on water effect with the shimmering, textured floor tile and my favorite part was the putative mother and son in the background.
Suggestion for the sequel: a red helium balloon that remains in frame and a cameo from Juliette Binoche as a luminous yet careworn mother accompanied by a small boy on a tricycle.

    1. I was reminded of Robert Crumb’s “Keep On Truckin'” period too, especially when the young woman in the high boots clomped past. Also, the burly gent just before the fade to black. No wonder Crumb split for Paris.

  3. Wasn’t just Interbikers walking through there, as I saw badges from one or two other conventions as well. I’m always amazed at the footwear choices of folks who must know the better part of their day is going to be on their feet? When I’m trying to navigate through places like these I wish humans were equipped with brake lights and turn indicators. I don’t much look at the folks in the actual casinos as I’m trying to get through ’em with as little breathing as possible.

    1. Yeah, there was a parks confab going on upstairs. A lot of ’em snuck downstairs to peek at the toys.

I wish I’d breathed a little less while there. I brought home some class of Snotlocker Surprise®. Started coming on late last night and was in full flower this morning. Snurk, hyeeenk, gah, etc.

      1. I’ve been sucking on zinc lozenges since I got home, trying to stave off whatever was going around at Interbike before we blast off to Richmond later this week. Hope you’re feeling better soon!

  4. Yes, walking a significant way on a regular basis sometimes does seem a bit archaic. Unless of course your out for a walk with the intent purpose of getting exercise. But I like the way that I see younger people now using longboard skateboards for transportation. As long as they maintain a bit of “conformist” control while riding in public, then skateboards are a very practical method of transportation. I recall riding mine (conformingly) in the Denver,CO airport (Stapleton, the old airport not the new feature that Mayor Pena so wisely partook upon) back in the the early 1980’s to meet up with a friend flying in. I was able to “breeze” down the concourse at a very controllable pace that was agreeable to the other airport users and to the airport staff in uniforms with guns…. and skateboards fit in overhead luggage bins and double up as luggage rollers……. Oh yeah, and now that I’m an old man…., chicks buy me free beers when I’m riding my skateboard……………Uh huh. Yep ! They sure do……………..

Now what was that about bicycles again ?
