Brown Dogging it

Back in the saddle again.

“I hate to get hit myself as it digs a hole you don’t quite get out of for a couple of weeks.” — Brown Dog in “The Seven-Ounce Man,” by Jim Harrison

Brown Dog, a.k.a. B.D., didn’t burn a lot of daylight worrying about politics or getting his ass kicked.

He got drawn into both from time to time, as we all do. But they didn’t leave any lasting marks on him. Not for long, anyway.

Preparing to do battle with a couple of bruisers whose women he’d been romancing B.D. mused that “it wasn’t likely to be the end of the world, just a real expensive way to pay for getting laid a few times.”

All the world cares about, his grandfather once told him, is that you get to work on time.

Well. Shit. We got boned and beat up last Tuesday. I still feel as though I’m down in that hole, but I guess it’s time to get back to work.

    1. Paddy me lad, it’s the bike I ride the most. Very comfy, nicely geared for the terrain hereabouts, 38mm plumpers between me and the mean streets of The Duck! City. What’s not to like?

      1. Not a thing. It just looks perfect. And 35/38mm tires got to be my favorite in the before times. That is the times before the fear and buying too many guitars set in.

      2. I put the 700-40 X’Plor MSO’s back on the Salsa LaCruz. Rides real nice and saved my ass yesterday when I had the sun in my eyes and hit a big pile of frozen snow. Just rolled right through it.

  1. Comfortable ride, comfortable weather, comfortable speed what’s not to like. Enjoy it It’s 38 degrees with 98 % humidity and 12 mph wind, overcast.
A deadly sin lurks in my heart i.e. ENVY.

    1. As the temps fell along with the snow the past couple of weeks I devolved into a pedestrian. The weather wasn’t anything you could do something interesting with so I settled for running.

Running isn’t my least favorite form of exercise — that would be swimming laps in an indifferently maintained pool, basically a hellbroth of viruses, bacteria and people you’d rather not see without their clothes on — but it’s a strong contender for the runner-up spot.

      1. “Pedal steel instead of the steel you pedal.” That’s another O’Grady gem for us to steal a few licks from.
Walking and hiking, preferably on a path or trail away from houses is my favorite exercise now. But, I never did consider walking or riding exercise. They are just fun and relaxing. The fitness is a side effect, and it’s one I really miss. That and riding with me mates on the Paseo del Bosque.

        1. I’m dialing back the riding in favor of running, Paddy me boyo. It’s the usual seasonal change of pace. I might do some hiking too.

Frankly, I think I was getting a little carried away, logging 150-mile weeks. It’s fun still, but damn, it burns a lot of daylight.
