Hot town, summer in the suburbs

Smoke in the foothills. It looked worse in the rear view.

Wildfire smoke and a record temp yesterday — 101°, 10 degrees above normal.

Nothing like what’s happening down in Aridzona, of course. Tucson hit 111°, and that wasn’t even a record. Neither was the high of 114° in Phoenix.

Do not expect to see me pitching my little tent at McDowell Mountain Regional Park anytime soon. Smoked Irish ham is not on the menu.

The air quality hereabouts being remarkable for its lack of same, I decided to skip the Monday Geezer Ride. I thought briefly about a short trail run, but when Herself returned from a morning appointment she advised against it, which is significant, her exercise mantra being “We can do anything for 30 minutes.”

After I drove to the bakery for a loaf of bread and a breakfast scone I agreed with her. Looking west I could barely see the river, and the Sandia foothills were shrouded as in the photo up top.

So we stayed indoors, following the news and gnawing on our livers.

Speaking of the news, here’s a thought: I’m sick of seeing cops decked out like comic-book vigilantes. I appreciate that theirs is a dangerous occupation, but it’s the one they signed up for. And the rest of us — the civilians who pay their salaries — don’t get to go about our business kitted out like X-Men as security cameras, drones, and our own pocket informers document our every move.

I want to see badges, nameplates, and faces. When even the cops can’t tell who the cops are, it’s time for a little transparency. Save the costumes for Halloween.

  1. This guy ran a security company, so he apparently knew how to fake it pretty well. Kinda scary, because when you see the cops outside at o-dark thirty, one might be trusting. One option is call 911 and ask if police have been dispatched to your residence. Of course most of us are not political honchos who have to worry about being assassinated.

I saw all that smoke over on the Sangres yesterday morning and wondered what was on fire. Was low 90’s here in Fanta Se yesterday but hit 100 deg in the valley between Pojoaque and Bombtowne. I was on my motorcycle riding through there and it was…toasty in full gear. Felt almost refreshing when I climbed back out of the valley to low 90’s on the way home!

  2. No fires (yet) and about 80 degrees in Laramie. Remember that, DogBoi, when you make fun of us when it hits 35 below in February. J

          1. That’s one of the things I miss about Field Marshal Turkish von Turkenstein (commander, 1st Feline Defense Regiment). He was a big ol’ cuddle-kitty, that one, right from the get-go.

Miss Mia Sopaipilla will tolerate a certain amount of affection, but strictly on her own terms. She likes to be nearby, but not actually in contact.

            The Young Turk

The Young Turk, getting an early start on laptime.

  3. I saw a fire hydrant chasing a dog on my morning walk yesterday. Air quality has been good, and I am happy there are no local fires about.
Police officers are not combat infantry and should not dress or be armed as such. And, hell no on anything but a medical mask.

  4. A cops “duty belt” can weigh as much as 16 lbs! with all the gear they carry. As they are now maxing those belts out and finding their pants falling down they’ve added the tactical vest which carry the weight better and more evenly distributed. But yeah, they look like they are going into battle and are intimidating We the People. Thought…maybe if they wore beanie copter hats they would soften the look a bit?

    1. Meanwhile, just in time for T.A.C.O. Tuesday, I see the Motherclucker-in-Chief is going all Rooster Cogburn on Iran.

If this dude threatens to kill me I’ll know I’ma live forever.

      1. He did it on his own social media. Threatening the leader of another country, with his own real army of fanatics, with death on social media kinda backfired on the boy. Some maga folks not happy about threatening another foreign war.
