Everyone’s a winner, bargains galore

wiggo-pythonToday is the neighborhood’s biennial yard sale, an event during which one hopes against all reason that strangers will cart off one’s useless bullshit and leave money in its place. This makes the tooth-fairy tale seem reasonable by comparison.

And now for something completely different: There is no truth to the rumor that Bradley Wiggins is skipping the 2013 Tour de France in order to stand in for the late Graham Chapman in a revival of “Monty Python’s Flying Circus.”

I think Brave Sir Wiggo’s knee really began to hurt when he was informed he would be fetching bottles for his skeleton-like teammate at Le Beeg Shew. What can you expect other than the “what have you done for me lately?” approach from an operation bankrolled by Rupert Murdoch?
Regarding the yard sale, I’m always amazed at what people will buy at these things…but you all know what my wife says!

    • Patrick O'Grady Says:

Ah, yes, there are stars, and there are water-carriers, and never the twain shall meet. You know how to tell someone’s a king, right? ‘Ee ‘asn’t got shit all over ‘im.”

  2. Patrick O'Brien Says:

There are businesses from across the border that come up here every weekend and buy truckloads of stuff from yard sales. Often they will make you an offer on many items and the haggling begins.
Patrick, do you happen to have a 54 cm Saga frame and fork in the yard sale?

    • Patrick O'Grady Says:

Alas, there were no bike bits of any significance in this year’s sale, Patrick. I do need to thin the herd in the garage, though. I’ve run out of hooks and places to put them.

    • Patrick O'Brien Says:

Just came back from the LBS (M&M Cycling) and ordered a Saga frame and fork set. Going to move all the components from my 520 to the Saga. I guess I will br carrying around a Trek 520 54CM frame and fork at the next GABA swap meet. If you only have one road bike, might as well make it a little special.

I can easily imagine it as Sir King Arthur Wiggins and his silly k-nigits from Team Sky. And, yes, I am all too happy to fart in their general direction.

As for the yard sale thing, I’m often amazed at what people will sell. I got a pair of Oakley M Frames, grey tint, with the hard case for $10 yesterday. Hello, ebay!

    • Patrick O'Grady Says:

One man’s trash is another’s treasure, as the saying goes. I try to stay away from yard sales, as I already have enough of my own “treasures” cluttering up the joint. I can scarcely stagger from room to room without barking my shins on one thing or another.

Yard sales are amazing things. My main commuter bike back in Honolulu, Hawaii, a Miyata 312 in practically out of the box condition (except for an ant colony living in the frame) cost me $25 at a garage sale and a few minutes hosing out the main tubes. More recently, I got a near perfect set of Bauch and Lomb 9 x 35 binoculars for five bucks, along with an apology by the seller that they no longer had the case.

People from elsewhere come up the hill to see what the…ahem…overpaid white folks in Bombtown…are selling cheap.

    • Patrick O'Grady Says:

We have dudes working the alleys here — old beater pickups rumbling slowly along, the occupants occasionally leaping out to inspect this, that or the other for resale value. Occasionally the items collected are not exactly discards, which is why I have a spider web of cables locking all the bikes together in the garage.

  5. Libby Says:

Sir Wiggo. “it’s pronounced Luxury Yacht”. Graham Chapman moment nod IIRC.

  6. Flahute Says:

No … he’s not standing in for Graham Chapman, because he’s been too busy doubling for Paul Weller.

    • Libby Says:

Ha! Wiggo needs to “keep on pushing”. He should give a listen to Weller covering (then listen to Curtis) Mayfield’s “Move on Up”, specifically:
” Bite your lip and take a trip
Though there may be wet road ahead
And you cannot slip so what you wanna do
Just move on up for peace you will find…”

  7. Jon Paulos Says:

Oh yard sales, my weakness. I’m no longer allowed to carry cash during yard sale season.

Brad and Graham; separated at birth? Ya know, we all expect a Tour winner to come back the next year and be a fave, but that bike racing is hard on a guy. Its too bad for BBSW, but he’s got a good career left ahead of him.
